Warhammer 40K: Goatboy’s Most Irritating In-Game Horrors
Goatboy here with my top 40K in-game horrors that happen from time to time at the tabletop. I bet you’ve hit some of these!
These are not opponent issues or other things – but instead the small little things that can just tilt your game off. These are things that you can never fully avoid and most likely just need to be experiences we must roll with the punches the game gives you. I think every player has these flashes of game nonsense and remembering, learning, and powering through them is how you become a better player.
Losing Dice, Ruining Your Perfect Dice-Set – GRRRR
Having a set number of dice and then losing one of them. I play a lot of armies that like to roll a ton of dice. Most of the time I set up on my dice tray a certain number of dice so I can quickly go back to it and just “Grab” them all and quickly know I am rolling 20-30 dice at the time I need too. This is one of the ways you can move through the game fast and not have it become an issue with timing out or just not getting thru to your turns if you didn’t bring a clock. This is why when one dice goes missing, rolls off the table, or somehow becomes one with the abyss it can be a frustrating experience. This is especially evident when you get something like a cool set of custom dice, or you roll with a special set of old dice that just somehow don’t treat you wrong.
It’s probably why I roll with a set of dice that I have a ton extra of. It is why I normally give out some during any game I am playing another World Eater player. You need to continue the love of Golden Khorne Symbol dice and the joy you get when that lovely symbol comes up and showcasing that sweet 6 you rolled for that armor save.
Breaking Off a Mini’s Delicate Bit – OH NOES!!!
This is one I feel in my hobby soul every time it happens. It’s when you are leaning over to pick up a model and somehow you hit some kind of spike, hair piece, or tail and break that off. You feel the snap against your fingers, but that break hits your soul especially if it is the first game of the event. Did you bring glue to fix it? Can you even fix it? Now your model isn’t perfect and for a hobby goblin like me that is important and a way to knock you off your game track.
Heck it is even more frustrating when you break it right before you are about to leave for an event. I remember my youngest son was upstairs when I broke the ponytail off my daemon model, and I said a few wonderful cuss words. He laughed then proceeded to say it a bunch of times as he danced around. But a break can just wreck your game play mojo.
Forgetting A Mini! – NO! WHY ME!?!
Finally, there is nothing worse than packing for an event and somehow forgetting a model/unit when packing. This happens when you are going to an event and rushing to get an army together. You travel so far and open your box and somehow an important piece of your army is just not there. It could be that special character that is leading your troops or the unit that sits back on your home objective. You could scramble to see if anyone locally has the models available, but it isn’t your model, so you already get here feeling off. This is one of the worst things and its why I always pack and repack my army to make sure all the pieces are there. I don’t want a bunch of Koozi Grot cannons sitting on a tabletop ready to be made fun of.
What things can just grind your game to a halt that you control? This is all about how you can try to keep on track but there are times you just can’t get your brain in line. It could have been some gnarly traffic on the way back from lunch. It could be some kind of text message group that just blows up your phone. It could be just playing with unpainted models because you didn’t have time to get your stuff done. All these little things can make your experience rough. Remember it’s just a game.
We want to hear your hobby horror stories!
