Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – The Maggotkin of Nurgle Glow Up
It’s time to talk about the new updated miniatures for the Maggotkin of Nurgle. They are more bloated and rusty…but not quite as “crusty.”
The more I look at the new miniatures for the Maggotkin of Nurgle the more I think that Games Workshop is taking them in a new direction. While they are still quite bulbous and rusty something is different. They seem more bloated than putrid now. There’s more “mass” and less decay — or at least a different stage of decay. The new miniatures are still very much Nurgle. But well, I think this comparison image sums it up really well:
On the left we have the new/upcoming Putrid Blightkings. On the right is the current version. If you check the copyright date on the sprues, the old version is from 2013…which is kind of wild to think about. At the same time, you can clearly tell that the new ones are just …cleaner? Maybe it’s the paint job but they don’t look quite as disease-ridden or rotting as the old version. There’s no exposed internals. No nurglings hiding on them. And while they do have signs of bloating and mutation, it’s no where near as sever as the current ones.
Again, I’m not saying they AREN’T in need of medical attention here…there’s very clearly signs of disease and rot. But again, it looks, well…cleaner. It’s not quite as ghastly or nasty as before. Here’s another example. The Lord of Decay vs the Lord of Blights:
It seems like one version of these guys is really putting the “Maggot” into Maggotkin while the other is kind of phoning it in. On one hand, I will say the Lord of Decay does seem a *tad* more realistic in some ways. Although I think that’s more to do with the paint job than the sculpt. The Lord of Blights, with it’s cartoonish green skin and stomach-full-of-maggots, does feel a lot more over-the-top and fantastical.
Still Nurgle. But …Different.
To be clear, I’m not saying I hate this new look. I’m still taking it in. As I said at the top, the new Maggotkin are a lot more on the bloated and rusty side vs the rotting corpse/disease husk side of Nurgle. It’s different stages of decay. At the same time, if I’m being completely honest, this does feel a like the “PG version” of Nurgle. Still gross but not quite as grotesque. Still decaying but not as far along. And maybe not quite as nasty…but still gnarly.
So what do you think? Do you like this new “cleaner” version of the Maggotkin of Nurgle? Or are you against this “PG version” of the Maggotkin?
Maybe it’s just the paint jobs? Festus is still pretty gross overall…
