Warhammer Quest: Darkwater – Hero Rundowns Direct From Games Workshop
Are you curious to learn how the Heroes of Darkwater will play? Games Workshop has a rundown of how they will work in the upcoming Warhammer Quest game!
Part of the fun of Warhammer Quest is finding the right hero for you and your particular playstyle. Today, GW has provided a basic overview of how each of the heroes you can choose will work in the new game. These aren’t super mechanic-heavy descriptions. These are high-level looks at how they typically function and GW sees them performing their role in game. So let’s tackle each one of these characters and see what GW has to say about them.
“In-game, Edmark is a fighter and tank who wants to get stuck right into the thick of it, able to reliably block incoming blows with the Shield of the Manticore, and riposte furious flurries from his enemies thanks to his explosive temper.”
From the details about the Manticore Knight, it’s pretty easy to see that he’s your typical tank/fighter-type. He’s going to be a frontline warrior and has strong defenses to tank the hits and then strike back. If you like to be in the thick of the action, Edmark Valoran might be the character for you!
“When Drolf sprints in game, he’s able to ignore the effects of lethal and snare hexes on the maps – traps or environmental hazards that harm or hinder you. His ranger’s kit lets him bypass blocked hexes entirely, which is perfect for navigating the maze-like Jade Abbey.”
Drolf is probably the closest thing to a “scout” or really more of a rogue-type in this crew. He’s got a surprising amount of mobility and also packs a crossbow to help from a “safe” distance. If you like scampering off to find treasure and then “lend a hand” from a distance, you might just be a future Grizzled Explorer.
“Benefitting from the saint’s guidance, a player can choose to re-roll either all her move rolls – all characters but Drolf roll a dice to determine movement – all her attack rolls, or all her save rolls each turn.”
Are you one of those players that feel like they have really bad luck? Are the dice out to get you specifically? Then it sounds like you need all the re-rolls you can get and Bren Tylis might be your best bet. Not only does she pack the re-rolls, she’s also got a way to hang on to loot/rewards that would normally get discarded. That sounds useful for the unlucky types to me.
“She’s able to summon a barrier of water formed of this sacred liquid, creating a blocked hex in a place of her choosing. “
Inara Sion packs the Aqua Ghyranis which apparently also comes with some restorative properties. Hopefully, that means she can aide your teammates. But that Water Blockage she can summon does sound useful, too. It also grants some “repositioning” powers which could help get her out of danger. If you like to play an active support role on your team, keep an eye out for the Cleansing Blade!
“As Drasher takes damage, and as enemies are slain, his fury builds until he explodes in a whirlwind of rage. If there’s not much action, Drasher can use the Ebon Claw to self-flagellate, building his fury that way.”
As much as the Manticore Knight is a frontline tank, it sounds like Drasher Vorn is the frontline berserker. He certainly sounds like he can take the hits and then turn around and dish out even harder hits. If you like using your health as just another resource to do damage, playing the Rampaging Beast sounds like kind of character!
“A master of mobility, he is able to charge through and leap over lesser foes like they aren’t there, all while letting loose volleys of arrows with unerring accuracy. “
Kelthannor isn’t just a mobile firebase (although he certainly sounds like he’s good at that). He’s also got some helpful tricks to get your allies in position, too. In particular, he’s got a Hunting Horn which he can use to move your allies a hex. If past iterations of Warhammer Quest have taught me anything it’s that those one-more-space moves can be the difference between victory and defeat …if you use them wisely. So if you are looking for a tactical edge beyond laying down loads of fire then you could be a great Forest Prince yourself!
“By focusing intently, he can summon his spirit ally, Wisper, which he can use as a conduit to attack through, or even swap places with entirely. His Vineroot Staff can entangle enemies, reducing their movement and attack power, which is great for keeping everything under control. “
It’s not ALWAYS about slaying out in Warhammer Quest. Some enemies need to be slowed or weakened from a distance. The Jade Wizard brings that control/utility to the table. Plus he’s got cute forest friends to call in and exert influence from. If you like playing with more creatures and locking down the field then you need to hang out with Jacobus Yvne!
A Few More Details
GW also dropped a couple more interesting tidbits on top of the character descriptions. First up, it seems like not all seven heroes are initially available for your campaigns. So that’s a slight twist — you’ll probably have to encounter them in the abbey to recruit them. Also, their signature equipment has upgrades later on…those could be game changing.
“The four core heroes have alternative character cards to unlock, too, but we’ll leave you to discover those – and all the intricacies of how these characters work together – when you play Warhammer Quest: Darkwater yourself. “
Well now, that could really make the experience different on later play throughs. I do wonder just HOW these characters will change now.
Still hoping for some pirates in this Darkwater game…
