Something has been bothering me since The Old World returned. Whatever happened to the Kislev army and those teasers?

Maybe it’s just me or maybe it’s that my memory got jogged from the World Championships of Warhammer Preview, but now that Cathay has gotten TWO large releases, I have a question: Where’s the Kislev Army?

Surely, I’m not the only one that remembers this concept art, right?

On top of that, we also had all the Kislev icons on the map of the Old World, too.

That map is actually from the July 2021 update on the Old World where the Kislev nation was heavily mentioned. But it actually goes back even further than that. Kislev was mentioned as part of the early development for the Old World. We has teasers all the way back in March of 2020. I had to do some digging but it’s still up on the WarCom site.

Heck, Kislev even showed up in a February 2021 teaser for Total War: Warhammer III.

Obviously that has come out and Kislev is still a thing in Total War: Warhammer III still. And if you think back, that’s also kind of where the Grand Army of Cathay was re-imagined first, too. There was clearly a lot of early development for them in The Old World. Their units got 3D creations for Total War: Warhammer III. So there’s art and 3D models — I’m also betting GW is probably sitting on their rules somewhere. It’s been over 5 years so I wouldn’t doubt a draft or two is floating around the GW HQ for those. So again, where did Kislev go?

No Kislev Army In Sight?

I do wonder if the Grand Cathay army sucked up all the resources from the Kislev army. Perhaps there was more interest in this army instead of the Kislev Army. I’m not sure how that discussion went down or what actually happened. I have a suspicion that Kislev getting pushed back probably had to do a real world event. I could be wrong as that’s just a guess…but the timing (unfortunately) lines up. The last official WarCom post about anything Kislev related was in February 22, 2022. The Russian Invasion of Ukraine launched on the 24th of February, 2022.

Anyhow, sorry to be a downer there. But the real world has changed since the first concepts of the Old World arrived. At this point who knows if/when Kislev will ever see the light of day. I can see folks arguing both ways for this army to come out (or not). Whatever your stance, it’s clear that GW decided to avoid that land mine and just side step that conversation for now. In the meantime, Kislev might be waiting on the back burner for a while…

At least we got Grand Cathay out if it?
