I’ve waxed poetic about my favorite childhood LEGO sets, but today we’re looking forward. Here are some of my favorite sets you can get right now.

UCS X-Wing (75355)

The current UCS X-Wing is right up there as one of my favorite current LEGO sets. Indeed, mine sits in pride of place on my display wall. It’s a really fun, big build that brings to life the most classic of all Star Wars fighters. The S-foils have a very satisfying movement system, and it looks accurate. What more do I need to say! It’s a freaking cool X-Wing! Sadly, it’s not going to be around all that much longer, but for now, it’s here, and you can grab your own.

LEGO Icons Tudor Corner Building (10350)

Some days you don’t want to dominate the Free Peoples of Middle-earth, you just want to curl up as it snows and build something cozy. For those days, I present the Tudor Corner Building. LEGO puts out a bunch of these modular buildings you can connect into a big city. They are generally cool and work well, and I wish I had space for more of them! Now I personally LOVE me a good Tudor building, and they really scream cozy to me. This is a perfect set to sit next to the fire with a nice cup of tea and build. I’d tell you how this build goes, but my wife may have stolen mine to build for herself!

 Spider-Man Daily Bugle – 76178

Every now and then, LEGO puts out one of these big Marvel building sets. As a Spider-Man fan, the current Daily Bugle set is a real fav of mine. Now the build itself isn’t crazy, but it is solid. You get a pretty decent-sized building for the Bugle. It’s also a pretty dynamic build with a lot of stuff going on.

The real star of his show is the mini-figs. You get a staggering 25 minifigs. So it’s not just Spider-Man and a few of his allies, but also a good chunk of his rogues’ gallery. You also, of course, get J.J.J. – so feel free to use him to yell at anyone and everyone to bring you more pictures of Spider-Man!

This one is retiring at the end of the year – grab it while you still can.

Neuschwanstein Castle (21063)

If you are looking for more of a real building to have on display, the Neuschwanstein Castle set has you covered. LEGO architectural sets feature some of the world’s most iconic buildings, and Neuschwanstein is widely considered the most iconic castle in Europe. Built by Ludwig II (“The Mad King”) of Bavaria, Neuschwanstein is a true fantasy castle, and one of the most beautiful buildings in the world.

The LEGO set does a great job of recreating the outside of the castle (the inside was never finished in real life, so I guess the LEGO set isn’t all that far off in that regard). It even has alternate trees you can set up depending on what season you want it to be. This is a really cool set, and while LEGOs aren’t cheap, for most people, this castle is going to be a heck of a lot cheaper than visiting the actual one! Though still go do it, it’s wonderful.

Lord of The Rings Barad-Dûr (10333)

But maybe you want an actual fantasy castle? Well, the amazing Barad-Dûr is probably the best set for you. This is one of the biggest and most imposing LEGO sets around, and it really brings to life Sauron’s fortress in the heart of Mordor (at least the Peter Jackson movie version).

It’s a super cool build and just dominates all around it (with its, uh, will to dominate). This set is just chock full of great details and nods. Sure, you’ve got the obvious, like the massive burning eye. But you’ve also got a kitchen with meat very much on its displayed menu. Genius. That menu block is likely my signal favorite LEGO piece. Also, if you are like some kind of Dwarf and just made of money, you can get two of them and stack the tower even higher!

25th Anniversary Millennium Falcon (75375)

If you want something a little more compact, but with a ton of options, check out the Millennium Falcon midi scale ship. This is a really cool and fun little build, and the most affordable current way to grab a Falcon set of your own. In fact, I really recommend any of the midi scale ships. The Falcon is a really cool one because a lot of creators have made alternate builds for it. You can check out a few here! While they use a lot of the other midi scale ships for alt builds also, the Falcon is by far the most common. So why not snag a few to get a whole fleet of different ships?

NINJAGO The Guardian Dragon (71847)

I feel like NINJAGO kind of gets a bad rap or is often overlooked. This is mainly due to it being a LEGO original IP and being seen as more aimed at kids. But mates, this theme has some really cool builds! In fact, a lot of the LEGO original stuff has real hidden gems. Of them, the Guardian Dragon is my current favorite. This is just a giant, cool-looking dragon on a display stand. It’s cool, it’s epic, that dragon looks rad af and is ready to mess you up. I dunno what more you want.

Super Mario Game Boy – (72046)

If you want a simple, smaller build with a lot of nostalgia, I’d recommend checking out the Super Mario Game Boy. This set recreates the classic handheld Game Boy. If you are of a certain age (mine), this was a pretty ubiquitous part of many people’s childhoods. This build is super faithful and really copies the look. You also get to game cartridges, Super Mario Land, and Link’s Awakening (minor gripe, no matter how hard I blew in them, they would not work).

The set also comes with a couple of pieces you can put in to change the “screen” displays. This really sells the illusion of playing one of the games. Just a really cool set.
