WotC’s first big foray outside of its previously established IP, Exodus, paints a picture of a world full of space octopi, mechs, and more.

Archetype Entertainment, WotC’s big Austin-based video game studio, currently hard at work on the sci-fi RPG Exodus, showed off a new trailer at The Game Awards this past week. In it, space octopi piloting mech suits, a story that takes you across the stars (and time), and a whole lot of fighting robots with magic powers a la Mass Effect.

Which, let me be clear, I’m here for. I loved Mass Effect, and the influence that trilogy has had on sci-fi games is pretty astounding. It brought a certain kind of space magic that there’s no denying – ironically enough, you can see its influence in certain Star Wars video games. So it comes full circle with Exodus, which has Drew Karpyshyn (of ME fame) and James Ohlen (of KOTOR and Dragon Age: Origins fame) heading up the project. See for yourself.

Exodus In 2027 – WotC’s First Big Video Game Leap

Many eyes will be on Exodus with its upcoming release window of early 2027. It’s WotC’s first big step into video games apart from Magic and D&D, both of which have had some exemplary games and some less-than-stellar releases. But as Wizards of the Coast heads up video games and other digital entertainment at Hasbro, this is the turn off down the larger road.

And what a turn it’s looking to be. In the trailer, we get a better idea of the hero and the storyline of the game. Jun Aslan, a humble salvager who turns out to be a Child of Orion. What does that mean? Space magic – specifically the ability to wield Celestial technology.

And we also got a glimpse of the cast of characters that will be your loyal companions along the way:

“Exodus offers freedom in gameplay style, allowing players to approach challenges through stealth or open combat. Both paths are designed to be equally rewarding, empowering players to tailor their experience. As the story unfolds, fans will unlock new weapons and abilities, form bonds with companion, and discover combat synergies that deepen both the gameplay and storytelling.

Jun will not face this journey alone. Throughout Exodus, players will meet companions with unique motivations and secrets. These relationships are integral to the experience, bringing new lore, side stories, and quests that enrich the vast narrative universe.”

That’s cool and all. But I want to know more about that space octopus in a mech suit. We know that Awakened Animals are a thing in the game. Indeed, in the trailer you can see them in many fights. Or you can check out the Exodus tabletop RPG and learn even more about them.

But that doesn’t get me any closer to knowing more about Salt, the octopus who is, sadly, not a romanceable companion. Yet.

That’s gonna be one for the mods!
