WotC hits the ground running with a new Unearthed Arcana featuring four new “mystic subclasses” – guess they can’t keep saying Arcane.

A new Unearthed Arcana has arrived, bringing with it four new “mystic subclasses.” What does that mean? Well, it turns out that means spellcasting. Because each of these new subclasses revolves around using magic. It puts me in mind of the Arcane Subclasses playtest, which is probably no coincidence. Whatever other things are on WotC’s plate, it seems magic is on the mind.

D&D Gets Four Mystic Subclasses

We’ll be going through each of these subclasses in-depth, especially since all four of them are brand new. But, for now let’s do a quick overview of what you’ll find in the playtest packet.

First up, the Warrior of the Mystic Arts Monk, which is a Monk subclass all about casting spells. This has been something tried before – the old iteration of the Four Elements Monk is an infamous example. But the Mystic Arts subclass has a lot more flexibility. You even get spell slots which you can recharge with Focus points. Seems pretty fun.

Then there’s the Oath of the Spellguard Paladin. A new, defensively-oriented Paladin subclass that seems to be inspired by the Spellguard Shield, an item in the 5.5E Dungeon Master’s Guide. They are all about protecting your allies from and also dealing with enemy spellcasters. To this end, they get Counterspell shenanigans and a reaction attack that begs for Mage Slayer, too.

Then there’s my favorite of the bunch, the poorly named, but richly flavored Magic Stealer Rogue. I mean, Spellthief is right there. And that’s what they do, these Rogues steal enemy magic to empower their own Sneak Attacks. They also can steal ongoing spells but, weirdly enough, don’t do any magic themselves.

Finally, the Vestige Patron Warlock imagines a Warlock whose patron is a much more active presence, because you summon them to aid you in combat. No seriously. This class revolves around summoning a vestige of a dying deity and having them aid you as a summonable companion.
