Night Hunters is an upcoming new “gothic horror toolkit” for both D&D 5E and Tales of the Valiant. Look for it soon on Kickstarter!

Kobold Press knows that this year is all about The Horrors. Specifically, gothic horrors, which are much better than the horrors of, well, just look around you right now. Instead, Kobold Press’ upcoming Night Hunters bills itself as an exercise in forbidden lore, new mechanics, and expanded, deepening Dread. Let’s check it out!

Night Hunters – Coming Soon To Kickstarter For Tales of the Valiant and D&D

Kobold’s new book will be for both D&D and Tales of the Valiant. As a “horror toolkit” it presents a number of new rules that you can use to evoke the fear that we look for from horror adventures. Or, at the very least, to make things feel real gothic and oozing with shadowy flavor.

Some of the new rules include a “Shadow Tokens System” which lets you take on peril with the promise of power – or some other reward. Essentially it’s a way for the GM to twist the narrative while offering players something in return for the added peril. But you might be more interested in the new “Threats of the Night. It “include curses, diseases, and other hazards that can bring corruption to your PCs.

Of course, that’s just the start. There are actually two books planned for this Kickstarter campaign (along with a few spooky add ons we’ll get into in a bit), the second being Night Terrors, an adventure anthology that collects 12 adventures that make use of the new elements introduced in Night Hunters.

This means you can see the new toys in action. Find out what exactly a Dread Villain means, as opposed to a regular bad guy. Get a taste for how the new curse rules are supposed to work, etc. etc.

Of course, this isn’t just a book for GMs. Players will find new subclasses with supernatural themes, new monstrous lineages and haunted origins, as well as a host of new talents and spells. Basically if you want to make your D&D or ToV character a creepy lil’ goth hottie, this book has you covered.

But if you want to get even more occult, there are a few add-ons planned. Not even stretch goals, just extras you can get as part of the campaign, including a “tarot-sized card deck” and a “spirit board.”
