Do hooves have thumbs? Is that even a thumb?! Take a look at the latest Rumor Engine from Games Workshop and tell us what you think.

I’m not sure what we’re looking at exactly but I know it’s a limb of some type. I won’t keep you guessing. It’s Tuesday and that means we’ve got a new Rumor Engine you should see and decide for yourself.

“After last week’s Rumour Engine, many of you called in to let us know that, in fact, most things in the 41st Millennium have fingers of some sort and it was a weird hill to die on. You’re right, we were out of line, and to apologise we’ve extracted an image of something that absolutely, definitely does not have fingers.”

Rumor Engine: Hoof or Paw?

Okay, so I went ahead and looked up some anatomical terminology to help me figure out if this was a hoof or a paw. A hoof is the “horny part of the foot” specifically of an ungulate mammal. The hoof is made of a keratin (the hard part) covering; it’s basically the tip of the toe of these creatures. Or in human terms, it’s the nail on your fingers. That’s probably an oversimplification but hopefully that makes sense.

A paw, however, is an animal’s foot that has either claws or pads. So it’s the entire foot of the creature. Additionally, I don’t think the creature above is an ungulate meaning it doesn’t just walk on it’s claw/hoof. It looks more like a dog’s paw so that would make it a plantigrade. Now that I’ve spend way too much time looking at the different types of animal hooves/paws and learned the proper terminology…I’ve still got no idea what the heck we’re looking at. Plus, in the grimdark, sometimes the horses HAVE paws…

Just in case we wanted to muddy the waters even further. Anyhow, the point is regardless if this creature is a horse or dog or even a creature from the warp, all we’ve got is a leg to go on.

Now, it does remind me a bit of the Death Korps and their genetically modified calvary units. But uh…yeah, they still don’t look identical. If this is a “hound” well, there’s loads of possibilities there, too!

Shoot, are we about due for some resculpts anyhow? And we haven’t even gotten into all the possible mount options this one could be. So here’s where I kick this one over to you. If you’ve got a theory on what the heck we’re looking at drop us a line in the comments. Shoot, for all I know this is some sort of Centaur creature from the deepest 40k lore out there.

Oh wait, it’s not a Zoat. Unless they are evolving…

It’s probably a new Space Marine Lieutenant Mount, right?
