The new Skitarii Battle Group box is out for pre-order this weekend. Time to take a closer look at it’s contents!

With the arrival of the Skitarii Battle-Pilgryms the Horus Heresy is getting a new front. Slightly. What I mean is that we do already have Mechanicum forces at play. However, these Skitarii are a new “faction” for them. There’s two sides to them just like the Mechanicus: They fought on both the loyalist and traitor sides of the Horus Heresy. That means this box is great for anyone with the urge to add them to their force regardless of which side of the conflict you’re on.

That said, you’re not here for their lore; you’ve come to see the miniatures. So let’s take a look at them now!

Vultarax Stratos-automata

One of the few battle automata the Skitarii have access to, the Vultarax Stratos-automata is a welcome addition. These floating machines have really potent scanning arrays and auspices. That makes them great for locating things — relics and enemies alike. You can see those arrays on the the miniature. What I really find interesting and creepy are the various spindly bits. It reminds me of a Mollusk reaching out to grab prey. Or in this case ready it’s various weapon system to obliterate it’s target.

Skitarii Battle-Pilgrym Marshal

Every force needs a good field commander and that’s where the new Battle-Pilgrym Marshal fits in. This is a multi-option kit so you can really customize how you want to out fit this commander. There’s not only various weapon options but depending on which options you choose can also influence his pose at the end.

I do like the versatility of this kit and it’s one that I’d likely find a way to include into a Skitarii/Mechanicum army if I ever started one.

Skitarii Battle-Pilgryms

Finally, we have the Battle-Pilgryms themselves. These guys are the grunts of the box and you’re going to get a bunch of them. Obviously, there’s quite a few ways to assemble them but I just wanted to point out the general aesthetics of these miniatures. These are certainly the “Proto-Skitarii” to the modern Ad Mech forces. You can see all the same sorts of design options with the cybernetic parts (particularly their legs).

I do find if interesting that their robes are tattered and torn. I’m not sure if that’s because they are battle weary or because they just don’t mantain their cloth-gear. They seem like they are in need of resupply. Depending on which side of the conflict they are on and where they are fighting it makes sense. I do like their sort of rag-tag nature and the contrast between their well-oiled machine parts and torn-robes is noticeable.
