Warhammer 40K: C’tan & Friends Bring Back Kit-bashes (for now)
Goatboy here, this past weekend a pile of 40K events allowing rules to be played without models – with C’tan leading the kit-bash revival!
This past weekend saw a pile of events that are allowing rules to be played without models. It has been a long time since GW has released rules without the models being available to purchase. Heck it was many years/editions ago that you had to create some units that were in your book because GW was waiting to release them. I am sure if you go back in time you can see the sheer amount of “Counts As” Thunderwolves that were out there and wrecking face.
New Nightbringer is Here – Maybe Needs a Bigger Base
This time around the mess is due to some brand new Necron C’tan rules causing all kinds of fun little problems. You could also say the Titus and friends could be an issue but playing a small band of human heroes is not nearly as much fun as playing a giant piece of a Star God. Especially one that is angry and hates all living things. The Nightbringer rules are pretty dang impressive. They are powerful enough to force a lot of players to go into overdrive in either quickly converting or even throwing the old model onto something in order to increase its size on the table top.
I get by with a little help from my friends…
Here is my buddy David’s quick build for an event last weekend. He went with a taller set up to help sell this is the new crazy star god and he is mad. He is so mad he needs a power walker to take him around. Those extra inches of movement due to having four cool legs of doom. I am sure will see a ton more and wonder if someone will post all the fun things seen at the Palm Springs event.
Kitbashes are Back – For Now…
It is a weird thing because I grew up having to figure out kit bashes for a ton of models in the game. Every new book from 3rd to 5th edition usually had some new idea of a unit but players had to wait months for that option to come out. The idea of having models and rules released at the same time was luxury not afforded by all the other armies out there. I had to make my Nob Bikerz. I needed to figure out my Thunder Wolves (or Space Goats as I used to play).
I think for this past weekend it is probably ok to let the monsters out. I hope we see people put in some effort in trying to get these homebrew C’tan to work. The non GW events should be easy to get either a 3rd party kit or some kind of STL printed quickly. I know I have seen a lot of giant monsters show up from other groups. I would also think some of the cool look Greater Daemon options might be good too. We’ll see if this is a true problem or that unit ends up just being a boogie man full of smoke.
I really think the more interesting model is Nekrosar as he fits into any Necron army like an angry spiked glove of doom. That guy is for sure going to see some play as he fills in an interesting wing/expansion bully ready to cause the player headaches. I wonder what kind of fun things will see. Here is my painted one I worked on this past weekend as a “fun” project.
I wonder if will see this happen again with the release of digital rules before actual models hitting the shelves? Are we going to see this with Huron and his pirate goobers?
What other weird things are we going to see when heroes get their data sheets but models take a few weeks to come out.
