Goatboy here with a rules review of the new Captain Titus reveal PDFs.  Does the world’s most famous Ultramarine, and the Wardens of Ultramar hold up on the 40K tabletop?

Thankfully this model isn‘t going to be a Legends release and instead we have some rules for 40K.  He looks a bit nutty with some interesting interactions with his fight on death and pile of wounds – I mean friends.  This is an interesting unit for sure and I am sure will see it on the tabletop with Space Marines aka Ultramarines Super Supplement.

Captain Titus

Will start this with a Review of Titus.  He had a model before and while it was an ok model that didn’t see that much play.  This guy new model and set of rules might see play especially with his new friends.  His new rules gain a +1 to the strength of his Chainsword, he kept the sustained hits to his unit, and he gained a new rules that kinda matches his old fight on death sort of rule.

The new rule is Honour of Ultramar that allows Titus to fight on death on a 2+ and if he kills any enemy models with his fight on death he gets to stand back up with D3 wounds.  There is some interesting interactions with this rule but it again makes you feel like you should just shoot him to kill this dude.  He still has 5+ Feel No Pain and a pretty amazing looking cloak.  I do like how his Chainsword got better when he became a Captain and is still coming in hot with 8 attacks.  Oh and it still has Anti-Infantry 2+ so he will hit a lot of units and just go crazy thru them with his Chainsword of doom.

Wardens of Ultramar

Now the unit we have to worry about is the Wardens of Ultramar – the friends of Titus that hang around.  This is a giant unit of 4 wound jerks that Titus can join up with and cause a bunch of problems.  This is a unit of 6 Epic Heroes with different weapons and who can join other units to create a super unit.  The only character that can join them when they join another unit is Titus and the units they can join are Sternguard, Intercessors, Assault Intercessors, and Bladeguard Veterans.

I think the Bladeguard Veterans might be interesting as you have a pile of 4+ invulnerable saves and a ton of other interesting close combat attacks.  The characters also have an ability to allow you to redeploy up to 3 units as well before you figure out the first turn.  It is a wild unit just due to the fact you could give a unit an extra 20 wounds to chew thru.  It also has a crap ton of space it takes up as there is just a ton of bases, models to push things around, and just take up space.

The Verdict

I am not sure about these types of units in the game of 40K as too many named characters that always show up in armies just feels well – annoying.  I was hoping this unit would stay Legends but with it showing up in the game I know will be dealing with Company Hero Squads, this squad, and even Victrix guard units running around the able top.  It will be a game of Ultramarine super heroes and the enemies they want to remove from the world of Warhammer 40K.
