Warhammer 40K: Goatboy’s Review: The Nightbringer & Nekrosar Ammentor
Goatboy here to take a look at new rules for The Nightbringer and Nekrosar Ammentor. How do the two new Necrons hold up on the tabletop?
We have some new Necron goodness coming out with this 500 worlds. There are two new models that have come out and some datasheet tweaks this time around with The Nightbringer getting a sweet update and the new Nekrosar Ammentor the grandfather of the Destroyer Curse. It is a pretty good time to be a Necron Player as even the old C’Tan’s got updated as well to match the new and improved Nightbringer. Let’s lift the veil of time and bathe or world in the sickly green as we get into the Necron goodness coming.
The Nightbringer
We’ll start with the new Nightbringer model as GW decided to update him and all the other C’tans. The big shift is moving away from the half damage of the Necrodermis and changing it to just -1 damage to all the attacks. Now don’t you worry they did up all the wounds for the C’Tan to help bring some power back after losing half damage. I think it all works out for the best as they sit at 16 wounds each.
The two updated C’tans got changed to moving 10” which helps them get around the table top easier. The unnamed C’Tan and the Deceiver have their movement sitting at 8”. I am sure whenever we get an updated C’Tan kit and Deceiver kit will see changes to their profiles to match their bigger and better siblings. All of the C’tans moved to having a 3+ armor save with a 4+ invulnerable save as well.
Let’s look at the Nightbringer. He is coming in hot with a few very powerful attacks and his drain life ability. Every enemy model within 6” you roll a 4+ at the end of the fight phase to cause d3 mortal wounds to them. He also has an 18” d3 Death Gaze attacks as well as a very powerful sweep and strike profile for melee. Really he is just a brute with a ton of wounds, a 5+ feel no pain, and a -1 to damage. He is going to be sticking around for a while and just be prepared to deal with him or just ignore him if you can.
Nekrosar Ammentor
Nekrosar Ammentor is the more interesting update from this list as he is truly a Destroyer Cult leader for the army. He comes in pretty hot with a flat Damage 3 close combat attack, a pile of rules to help those Destroyer Models around him, and the well needed Lone Operative if he has friends near him. He is a brutal little monster and most likely will be the key to getting the Destroyer Cult to work on the table top.
If he kills someone with his attacks he grants a Destroyer Cult unit within 9” the ability to reroll 1’s to wound. He has a 6” aura of Sustained hits 1 for Destroyer Cult models. He grants a 5+ Feel No Pain to Necron units versus Mortal Wounds and Psychic Attacks. He also has the fights first ability too which is a powerful thing to have on a Melee monster.
Beyond all of this his fluff is pretty interesting as he leads a crazy horde of Necrons around the universe as he tried to get more Nightbringer Shards to try and fix the C’Tan. The Silent King even erases his memory for those Necrons that listen to him so it is almost like he is this crazy boogie man running around the universe. I love the idea of these crazy Necron leaders with different personalities as it helps process that the Necrons are not just mindless robots. Maybe one day we’ll get a lady Necron Queen!
The Verdict
I think between the updates to C’tans and this new Destroyer Character the Necron player base has to be very excited about the end of this edition. I think both of these miniatures are pretty amazing design-wise, and went together pretty well during assembly. If I played Necrons I would be excited about my future and all the upcoming options hitting the tabletop. Ammentar is the most notable of the two.
