The Ossiarch Bonereapers have a new Spearhead box coming to stores. Will this one be worth your hobby bucks?

I’ve been collecting and playing the Ossiarch Bonereapers since they launched. I’m about as old school for the OBR as you can get. So am I excited about this new Spearhead box? Yes and no. Yes, because I already have all these models in my army and I can run them in Spearhead no problem. No because I already have all these models in my army and I don’t really have a reason to buy them again.

Regardless of my personal feelings about this box I can still do the math to figure out if it’s a good deal or not. So let’s dive into that aspect of the new Spearhead box for the Ossiarch Bonereapers.

Liege-Kavalos $60

Teratic Cohort $65

10x Kavalos Deathriders $130

Total Individual MSRP: $255

Total Savings: $105

The savings are based on a Spearhead box price of $150. Which should hold steady based on the fact that the last few boxes have also been $150. So if you want to save $105 on these miniatures vs buying them individually, the yes, this is a good deal. That said, I really don’t think you’d want to buy two of these boxes. You could and it could still be a deal for the Liege-Kavalos and the Deathriders. But the Teratic Cohort is kind of dead weight in my opinion. And it’s not just because they are made of bone.

At least with the Liege-Kavalos you can build him as the alternate version which is Arch-Kavalos Zandtos. He’s actually a really good pick if you’ve got a lot of Chaos in your local meta. He’s a bit of a side-grade in my opinion compared to the regular Liege-Kavalos vs non-Chaos armies. Well, that was the case before the new Battletome. We’ll see how that pans out in a couple weeks I suppose.

But the Teratic Cohort? While the miniatures are unique to the rest of the army you really don’t need more than one set. Maybe one day we’ll see GW expand the OBR to include MORE of these unique miniatures as full units. But we know how it was between teasing an OBR Archer vs it showing up (just now with the new wave). Anyhow, if you DID get a second Spearhead you’d also be leaning REAL HARD into the Kavalos. That’s not a bad thing. But it does feel like 20 of them is making a very clear statement about how you want to play that army. It’s certainly not a terrible idea as I’ve seen worse ones…

Next Steps?

The OBR have a decent range that’s getting better with the next wave of releases. I think there’s a lot of potential for different builds now. I also think that this Spearhead is a good buy for anyone looking to start an OBR army. As far as expanding? I’d wait for until you get your hands on the Battletome to really plan it out. Right now, I feel like it’s a tad to early to tell. The good news is the Battletome and the Spearhead are coming out at the same time. I would suggest getting a hold of Karakros (if you can find one) or one of the older Vanguard/Spearhead boxes, too. Those are good starting options to build from.

Oh and you might want to snag the Endless Spells and the Bone-tithe Nexus. Again, if you can find them. Honestly, Katakros, the Endless Spells, and the Bone-tithe Nexus should be your top picks — even before you get your hands on a Battletome. Why? Because those are going to be universally good. Even if you don’t end up using Katakros or a few of the spells just having them in your collection opens up more options.

I’ve played a few different army ideas in my day. Arkhan the Black is another good support piece to bring if you want to really compete on the magic front. I know I’m suggesting a lot of point-heavy characters as well but I do think they bring a lot of value to the army. I’m curious to see how they perform with the new Battletome, too. So my advice is just to snag some of the “key” kits for the army, get the battletome, and plan out your army.

I really like that the OBR can field an army that can play in all the different phases of the game. For folks that are interested in starting the army it’s really just a matter of finding what you like about it and building towards those aspects. But you won’t know for sure until you get a hold of the Battletome and do some reading for yourself.

Wanna jump in? Get the Spearhead. Want to build an army you will stick with? Get the Battletome and plan it out from there.
