Goatboy here and let’s look at building a solid 40K Death Guard army with some of the newly announced battleforce boxes.

The new Death Guard boxed set is coming out in a few weeks and the combat patrol is pretty dang sweet so this should be easy to build for a decent price.  Death Guard are one of those armies that just feels good, lets you do a lot of things, and can be built in a few directions.  Their big monster stuff is also good so you can easily get a force with not a ton of models on the table keeping this from being a crazy army to buy, build, and paint.

Let’s start with the simple Combat Patrol. This is a pretty nice boxed set as it gives you a good HQ, Tallyman, a pile of Plague Marines, a Rhino, and one of the best Elite units in the game with the Deathshroud Terminators.  Let’s break this down to see what points we get from this.

Lord of Virulence – 100pts
Tallyman – 50pts
Plague Marines X 7 – 130pts
Rhino – 85pts
Deathshroud Terminators X 3 – 160pts

Total – 525pts
Cost – $145 is what I see online with a discount

This is a pretty decent little start and thankfully GW has given us another great box coming out.  The Vile Vectorium looks pretty sweet and gives us a ton of power to add to the army.

Here you get

Poxwalkers X 10 – 65pts
Poxwalkers X 10 – 65pts
Deathshroud Terminators X 3 – 160pts
Blightlord Terminators X 3 – 115pts
Lord of Contagion – 120pts
3 Foetid Bloat-Drones with Heavy Blight Launcher – 360pts

Total – 885 pts

Cost – $215 is what I see online with a discount

If you take all that and a combat patrol together you are sitting at 1410 points – which is more than enough to throw in a few other things to fill it out.  I think the biggest bang for your dollar would be to look towards Mortarion and maybe even a Daemon Prince to create another walking Mortie with one of the detachments and Feel No Pain.

Lord Mortarion Daemon Primarch of the Death Guard – 380 pts at 145.00 dollars
Daemon Prince Of Nurgle – 195 pts at $75.00

This leaves you with 15 points left if you take everything in this army – but most likely you won’t need too.  I see a few things we can cut out but overall this gets you a pretty playable army at $580.00 dollars which you might be able to find for cheaper if you hunt for used stuff.  I think you drop some of the useless models for the army and grab a few things.  This would be to add a Mephitic Blight-Haulers at 100 points and costing around $28 dollars. You would then add some enhancements and call it a day. Let’s put this together into something that would work for a player.

Death Guard Battleforce Build Tactics

This isn’t a crazy big Death Guard army but you have some pressure from the Poxwalkers boxing people in.  You have a bunch of tough units to deal with.  Your whole army will sticky objectives and let you just put the pressure on your opponent.  It feels pretty simple and nice enough to use plus it won’t cost you too much at a bit over 600 dollars.  You can get a ton of this cheaper if you look at some of the used options and even reselling back some of the models you are not using.
