Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Xavier’s Students Unboxed & Up Close
We’ve got the new Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack for Marvel: Crisis Protocol in the house and we’re taking a deep dive today!
Atomic Mass Games is making it really easy to get your X-Men fix these days. They sent me a copy of the new Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack and since they were doing a “show off your miniatures” post on their Facebook page, I figured I’d go ahead and use my painted versions for this post instead of the grey plastics. That said, I did want to get into the contents for folks who might be curious about them. If you’re looking to get started or expand from the X-Men Starter Set, this is a great way to do it!
This is a really nice bundle of X-Men fan favorites! Let’s dive in…
Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack Unboxed
As will all Atomic Mass Games products we’ve got the standard packaging here. The sprues are in one plastic bag, the cards are in another. If you’re new around here then you might be wondering where the assembly instructions are. Well, they use a QR code on that flyer to direct you to their website for those. Honestly, I didn’t use them but I’ve got quite a bit of miniature building experience and these aren’t the most complex miniatures to build. We’ll talk about the build more below. Anyhow, on to the cards…
If you want a much better view of the cards, then check out this article from AMG. Not only are their large, hi-rez images of these cards but it’s also a “tips and tactics” article to help you out if you’re just now taking these character out on the tabletop.
They’ve been out for a while but Colossus and Magik have been a *tad* hard to find. Bishop and Nightcrawler are (comparatively) new. But both pairs have been running around the tabletop for a couple years at this point.
That said, these are the exact same sculpts from their previous run. So these should be a shock to anyone. That said, I still really like all of these sculpts. I do have some thoughts on their builds and I’ve painted these up, too. So let’s check those out next.
Xavier’s Students Miniatures
These are my own miniatures and I’m happy with them on the tabletop. I did paint up Colossus in X-Force Colors (Black and Grey) even though I don’t believe he ever technically ran those colors in the comics.
I also went with a yellow/orange soulsword for Magik. To be honest, I was inspired by Marvel Rivals for that one. For build advice, Magik’s arms are a little tricky to glue in to the torso with the sword. The hands/fore-arms/shoulders weren’t easy to get to line-up so just take your time on those. For Colossus, my only complaint is that his left hand is part of the Sentinel arm he’s holding. I really wish those were separate so you could build him with him holding the arm like that. I kind of wanted to replace the arm with Wolverine for a Fastball Special. Oh well.
Nightcrawler is a really cool miniature because of all the options. Each arm can have a saber or be open handed. So you could have him kitted out in full pirate mode if you wanted. You can also glue the *BAMF* letters on his teleporting effect if you opt for that. Bishop was pretty easy to build as well. The only real tricky part was the energy ring around his left hand. But there’s a slot for the bit, you just have to look for it.
Overall, I really liked assembling (and painting) all these characters. If I was just starting out in MCP I’d totally snag this box. But I’m a 90’s X-Men cartoon fan so I’m 1000% biased here. Tossing these character on the tabletop with a couple of Sentinels is my idea of a really fun game!
The Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack is out and in stores now!
Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Xavier’s Students Affiliation Pack $69.99
This character expansion pack combines the previously released CP57 Colossus & Magik and CP112 Bishop & Nightcrawler into a single new product. This pack is ideal for players looking to expand their collection of mutant characters from the CP271 X-Men Starter Set, but can also be used to add some X-Men power to the various Affiliations found in CP143 Earth’s Mightiest Core Set.
My next painting project will be to do a “Classic” Colossus Paint Job.
