NPC Rivals! From Viva La Dirt Kickstarter Fully Funded – It’s Questing Time!
Viva La Dirt has a brand new Deck Building Card Game called NPC Rivals! and it’s Kickstarter is fully funded and going strong!
If you’re not familiar with Viva La Dirt, they are a “bunch of nerds who play games and make comedy sketches about games.” It says so from their description. But also they are a massive YouTube Channel. And they do indeed have a bunch of fun comedy sketches about games and other things. That said, they’ve recently launched a Kickstarter for their new game NPC Rivals! and it’s looks like really good time!
Viva La Dirt League Presents: NPC Rivals!
Your overall goal for this game is to gain more XP than your rivals (the other players). It’s a pretty straightforward goal but how you do it is where the fun comes in. You start as an NPC (each one is based off of the Viva La Dirt characters from their live-play sessions/sketches). Each one has a unique ability and matching D20. Because yes, you do roll dice in this card game, too!
From there, each player gets the same 10 card starting deck. Over the course of the game players will then purchase cards from a shared marketplace to refine their decks into ultimate questing machines! The rounds are simple: draw your cards, play your cards (all of them), complete quests, and repeat.
The game ends when a player completes 5 quests. But you’re still going to need to tabulate the total XP to figure out the winner. So these quests seem pretty important, right? So how does one complete them? Great question. Your hand has to have matching requirements. But that sounds a lot simpler on paper than in practice.
If you’re curious about how the game actually plays out there’s a pretty long live play session that delves into NPC Rivals! deeply. If you’re looking for something to play in the background or watch when you’ve got some time here you go:
Having said all that, I like this one. It’s got elements of other popular Deck building games like Dominion, Star Realms, or Clank! and you haven’t played any of those games you really should give them a go, too. NPC Rivals! does have a different twist on things and I appreciate that it’s different enough from those games to be unique. I also like the art style they opted for as well.
All that to say NPC Rivals! looks like a really good time. It’s also hit it’s funding goal and, from the looks of things, already has the game fully created and ready to go. This isn’t a fly-by-night operation with a surprise Kickstarter out of nowhere. That said, it’s always important to acknowledge this IS a Kickstarter and those have inherent risks and challenges. Those are listed at the bottom of their page. There’s also the issue of shipping and fun with taxes. Also toward the bottom. Just be aware of those fees that come with your Kickstarter Backing.
One additional note about this Kickstarter: Be sure to double check the tier you want to back at. Not all of them include the stretch goals. They DO list that info and I appreciate them doing it, but “The More You Know” and all that.
Finally, I also wanted to point out that this Kickstarter already has an estimated shipping date of October 2026. That’s relatively quick which I think is a good sign. That and the funding goal got SMASHED already. So, overall, I think this Kickstarter is a pretty safe bet if you’re looking to back it.
I do like a good deck building game. Viva La Dirt!
