Let’s de the math behind this new battleforce to learn what sort of a deal we’re getting with Battleforce Lords of the Maelstrom!

Huron Blackheart and his crew are coming to Warhammer 40,000. We got a good look at his rules and also the new Red Corsair Raiders, too. But now I want to take a look at the new Battleforce Lords of the Maelstrom directly. It’s time to find out what sort of savings players can expect with this one and if it’s worth trying to snag or not. Time to bust out the napkin and do the math!

Total Estimated Savings – $137.50

The price of this boxed set is based on previous Battleforce Boxes of $255. And I have it on pretty good authority that will be the new price-point of this one as well. The Red Corsair Raiders will be two sets of five miniatures which is why I’m using the base price of $65 per five of them.

I am glad to see the upgrade sprue included. I’m assuming it’s just one set based on the description from WarCom. If my estimates are correct this is a nice chunk of savings as you can see.

So is this one a good deal? The math checks out. I have been liking the rules for the Red Corsairs as well. The Renegade Chaos Marines look fun and you can also run them in another detachment with Huron Blackheart specifically for a different boost.

If you’re looking to get into a new Red Corsairs army this Battleforce would be an excellent purchase. There’s the very obvious next steps of getting the Masters of the Maelstrom Boxed set for Huron & Co. as well as the actual Maelstrom books, too.

Where Does Your Chaos Allegiance Fall

From there I think you’ve got plenty of options. If you’re more of a “regular” CSM player, you’ve probably already got the majority of these units. I could see skipping this one in favor of just picking up specific units you don’t have yet. I, personally, am looking at how to fit in the Red Corsair Raiders into a list anyhow. I like those 3 wounds per model! At the same time, I could also see converting or using Chosen…but you do you!

I think this set and the new releases are a nice addition to the CSM options. They slot in really well along side the existing units. The Red Corsairs feel like a slice of the CSM army you can add as part of a more “general” CSM collection or you could lean into them more and just play Red Corsairs. If you like your Dark Pacts then there’s no reason to do a full conversion to the Red Corsairs. But if you want to try a different play style and swap out some Detachments, you can do that, too!

My one concern is that we’re pretty late into this edition. So I’d be a little concerned about getting this army ready and on the tabletop before it becomes out dated. I’m pretty sure GW would roll these units into whatever future edition plans they have though. They are still Chaos Space Marines at the end of the day — and they aren’t going anywhere!

It’s a great deal but I might wait for the solo releases on this one.
