Warhammer 40K: Four New Combat Patrols For Chaos, Kroot, & Aeldari Corsairs
Games Workshop has revealed a new batch of Combat Patrols. Are you ready to jumpstart a new army for Warhammer 40,000?
Hot on the heels of the Maelstrom releases Games Workshop is dropping four more Combat Patrols for 40k. Two of these seem like nice additions for new Maelstrom-themed armies. The other two are just really nice to have. So let’s get into each one and see what’s coming!
Combat Patrol: Aeldari Corsairs
Contents
- Kharseth the Void Dreamer
- 10x Corsair Voidreavers
- Wave Serpent
- 5x Corsair Skyreavers
This boxed set seems perfect for folks who are looking to start a Corsairs Army but missed the big battleforce. It’s got the character Kharseth leading a lean-but-deadly batch of Corsairs. Personally, I really like the structure of this one as a whole. The Wave Serpent is great for ferrying around your Voidreavers (which can alternatively be built as Voidscarred). And you’ve got the Skyreavers to bounce around and cause trouble. For Combat Patrol games in particular, I think this is a pretty great intro box.
Combat Patrol: Red Corsairs
Contents
- Reave-Captain
- 5x Red Corsair Raiders
- 10x Fellgor Ravagers
- Chaos Rhino
So this is a weird one for sure. I suppose for the Red Corsairs, this is a good box, though. I’ll be completely honest, though, I’m not sold on the Fellgors in this box. But I do get why they were included. I don’t agree with the logic of it, but I can at least see where GW was going with this one. That said, in terms of gameplay mechanics, I don’t think it’s terrible. The Reave-Captain and the Raiders are already pretty tough and deadly. The Fellgors do make for good speed bumps and can cause problems. And if they were swapped out for say Chaos Cultists (or Traitor Guardsmen), you’d basically have every other CSM Combat Patrol ever.
Combat Patrol: Kroot
Contents
- Lone-spear
- 10x Kroot with 2x Kroot Hounds
- Krootox Rider
- 3x Krootox Rampagers
Hey, the Kroot are back with a new Combat Patrol! That’s neat, I suppose. I’m glad to see them getting something since their big re-launch. While none of these miniatures are new, you’ve at least got a nice box to get all these Kroot-specific units in one spot. I also think this might be a good option for doubling down on and getting two. But that’s mostly if you’re looking to run a full Kroot Army. This one could be fun for non-Kroot players to dabble with, too.
Combat Patrol: Night Lords
Contents
- Chaos Lord with Jump Pack
- 5x Chosen
- 10x Legionaries
- Chaos Rhino
- Night Lords Upgrade Sprue (replaces standard Legionaries Upgrade Sprue)
Okay, aside from the Night Lords Upgrade sprue, this one feels both appropriate for a CSM Combat Patrol and also just like every other CSM Combat Patrol. At least this one is Night Lords specific! And yes, I know the current CSM Combat Patrol doesn’t feature a Rhino, but the many previous iterations of a “starter box” had a very similar batch of miniatures. I’m not complaining, though! It’s a good mix for folks looking to start the army. Which is exactly what these boxes should be.
Overall, I say this is a really great batch of boxes for Combat Patrol. If you’re looking to play any of these armies I my initial thought is that these are good starting points. With the exception of the Aeldari Corsairs, I think each one has generic enough units that you could justify getting a second box. The only reason I’d think twice about the Aeldari Corsairs is that it has Kharseth, who’s an Epic Hero. But even then it’s tempting…
I’ve got the bandwidth to start another army, right?!
