The Red Corsairs have a new Combat Patrol coming. Is this one worth picking up for would be Chaos Warlords? Time to do the math!

Games Workshop showed off the four new Combat Patrols coming. Today we’re taking a deeper look at the Red Corsairs Combat Patrol to see what sort of a deal this boxed set is going to be. With Combat Patrols clocking in at $170 these days I’m honestly not expecting a huge deal based on what we saw already. Still, I’m willing to do the actual math to find out what the dollar amounts will be. So let’s get into it.

Red Corsairs Combat Patrol Pricing Breakdown

*This is the price for the Kill Team and does include the Kill Team extras. However, that’s the only way to get these miniatures outside of this boxed set.

Overall, I do think this is a good deal. While the discount is lower than I’d hoped to see, it’s still in the same ballpark of many of the other Combat Patrols. You could slice this up a few different ways in terms of the discount, too. You’re basically getting a unit for “free” here vs buying them individually. Also, this is a Combat Patrol so naturally it’s going to be one of the best ways to get into this sub-faction of Chaos Space Marines.

That said, this boxed set is currently the only way to get your hands on the Red Corsair Raiders right now. I’m sure they will get a solo release later. But unless if you managed to snag a copy of the Lords of the Maelstrom Battleforce, you’re going to have to convert your own Red Corsair Raiders if you want to add more.

So What’s Next?

As mentioned before you’re lucky if you got the Lords of the Maelstrom Battleforce. The Combat Patrol mixed with that box is a nice way to get your Red Corsairs Army rolling. However, the Red Corsairs currently have the same problem that the Aeldari Corsairs have: Many of their boxed sets are really out yet. Realistically, your next step is to wait for more of those units to arrive.

But that’s boring.

So let’s assume that you want to get a jump on a list so you can be prepared for when they DO arrive. So what can you be on the look out for?

Maybe you’ll get lucky and the boxed set for Huron Blackheart and the Masters of the Maelstrom will be in your local shop. That one seems like an obvious one to grab if you are serious about playing a Red Corsairs army. The Maelstrom Books would also be nice. If you do manage to find both of them in a store I’d consider you lucky for the day.

You might also want to consider a Traitor Guardsmen Squad or two. Chaff units are handy when you’re running a lot of more Elite units like the Red Corsair Raiders. We also know that Chaos Terminators are a viable option for the Red Corsairs army as well. So that one can’t hurt.

If you want to see what other options are good for the Red Corsairs their datasheets and detachments have been included in the CSM Faction Pack. Honestly, most of the Chaos Space Marine “Generic” units work with the Red Corsairs anyhow so you really can’t go wrong with those. Much like the CSM army, there’s a few ways to load up and swing away with the Red Corsairs. That’s really going to be influenced by what play style appeals to you. If you wanted to lean into more long ranged firepower the CSM (and by extension the Red Corsairs) have access to tons of options. Havocs come to mind. On the other end of the spectrum if you wanted to go for close combat kills the CSM army isn’t lacking in that department either.

There’s also the option to just add more Legionaries. Personally, I like that route. Shoot, if you wanted to really set some Space Marine Players off, why not mix in some “traitor” Primaris miniatures in there for fun. That could be a nice hobby project. Just add one or two in to a squad and see if anyone notices.

At the end of the day I think building out a Red Corsairs army is similar to a Chaos Space Marine list. That’s because it IS a Chaos Space Marine list but with the Red Corsairs flavor on top. The hard part is making sure you’re leading with the Red Corsairs “stuff” in the army so that it’s not just another CSM list. Really take a look at Huron’s Marauders or the other detachment Renegade Warband. See what about those rules appeals to you and then run with that. I think the Renegade Warband’s rule of Slaves to None is appealing. They lose Dark Packs but ranged weapons have the [Assault] Ability now. That seems like a fun idea to play with.
