Warhammer 40K: The Most Important Things 10th Edition Got Right
With a new 40K edition coming down the pipeline I want to talk about the things I GW really nailed with 10th Edition.
40K 10th Edition certainly isn’t perfect, but I can say as someone that has played competitively for decades this is the best edition we have had. It works pretty well and with some of the things I will talk about down below it is a much better game then we have had to deal with in past editions.
Digital Release for Rules, Detachments, and Points
This isn’t in any particular order but the push to digital for a lot of the supplemental rules for the game has been a great edition to the players experience. I know not everyone use the app but for the most part the basic rules housed in there, the updates we get form detachments showing up within the app, and the points being synced in is a great thing. The push to digital also means that anything that is found too good can quickly be updated and fixed. It is the same with any of the packs that get released with an issue inside them. They can quickly be updated and handled instead of waiting months for a FAQ to hopefully answer something. It isn’t always perfect as again why are things released wrong at times but it is a heck of a lot better than what we had before. I am happy to see this continuing and hope the next edition syncs it up more with locking in some universal rules and just getting better at making this game.
Boxed Sets Exactly Match Single Units with ALL Options
I love that you can buy a box of miniatures and you have all the pieces you need to make that unit. There isn’t the old days of figuring out if all the parts are useful or you need to find other bits to complete the unit. GW has really strived to make getting into this game easy with building out armies per box you buy – with either all the choices within or at least a “half” size of the unit. The sprues can look crazy but it’s pretty easy to figure out what the unit can take – with each choice being labeled pretty easily for those model options. Does this unit need to have 3 heavy melee weapons? The sprue is set up to showcase 3 heavy options within the 5 model choices you have. I hope we continue more of this and just make it easier for someone to quickly build up an army with just creating the strong path way from building initial hero and friends to adding more and more to your force.
New Battleforces Feel Complete
The new Battleforces have been pretty good in creating the fundamentals of your army. They seem to be set up with 1 hero and 2-3 choices which helps create your initial force to start playing with. The later boxed sets we have seen even push this even more with the “next” step in your army build by giving you another pile of models to build off of. I love this as it gives players some discount in their purchasing and lets players understand where to go next when they being this hobby journey of plastic nonsense.
Plentiful 40K Events – Both GW and Indies
I love that tournaments are doing well and it is easy to find an event to play in. I think this is great as it helps bring players to the hobby and helps them find a group of like minded people to hang out with. I have talked about how much this game can mean to me as a social event and these events bring that to light. We all need someplace to go hang out, throw dice, and create stories. It is a lot of fun and lets you forget some of the things going on and find people that hopefully feel the same way with you. The crazy stories of math not working out for you in a game is part of the fun and events help bring that out.
What do you thnk 40K 10th really got right?
