The new Defenders of the Great Bastion box is on the way and we’ve got the new miniature built. Time for a closer look!

When it comes to holding the line against Chaos the armies of Grand Cathay are no slouch. Their first wave of miniatures exploded on the scene and really shook The Old World up in a good way. Now they are getting a new wave of reinforcements to further round out the army. Today, we’ve got their upcoming boxed set Defenders of the Great Bastion to show off. So let’s take a closer look at these new miniatures!

There’s a lot to like about this box. These forces represent the Garrison forces that were stationed at the Great Bastion. They aren’t as flashy or elite as units of Jade Warriors. But don’t underestimate these ‘mere peasants’ as they have the training and the will to fight with the best of them!

Astromancers

To lead this battalion we’ve got the Astromancers (and their familiar). These two Wizards are masters of the elements of Yang and Yin. I like the fact that this box includes both an infantry and a mounted version. And there’s really no reason you can’t bring them both! They also come with various options for weapons as well as head-gear. Abe opted for the versions you see above as he was the one that built them.

Crane Gunners

The new Crane Guns sure are giving me Skaven Jezzail-team vibes. However their pavises look like much better construction and cover than Skaven…but that’s another topic. I also like their rifles as they seem to be taking a few design queues from Empire Engineers. Or maybe the Empire borrowed these ideas from Grand Cathay. I’ll let you argue about that one in the comments. Still, they look really cool and I like the look of their armor as well.

Iron Hail Gunners

The Iron Hail Gunners are backing up the rest of these forces with gnarly blunderbusses. If an enemy foolishly decides to get close to them you can bet on this unit spewing forth a hail of iron that will cut down their targets. That said, I really like the dragon faces on their weapons. Those seem appropriate in terms of their look and function.

Peasants with Long Spears

These Peasants with Long Spears aren’t as effective as their professional counter-parts. However, they fight to defend their homes and you have to respect that aspect. There’s also a lot of them. Weight of numbers is nice. Especially when that weight is being used to drive spears into the enemy. I like how you can see their uniforms aren’t as well protected as other units but their weapons still look sharp!

Peasants with Bows

Finally we have the Peasants with Bows. You don’t have to be the best hand-to-hand fighter if you can put an arrow into your target at range. And there’s LOTS of these archers ready to knock and loose volleys into the enemy. Again, I love the contrast in their clothing vs the professional Iron Hail or Crane gunners. This looks like a really cool unit as well with their various poses.
