One of the best things about D&D’s many magic items is when you have just the perfect backup plan without even realizing it.

Into each adventuring party’s life, a little rain must fall. And in D&D, that metaphor usually means you get either suddenly in over your head, or you can’t roll above a 3 when it really matters. But then, there’s that magic item that’s just sitting there in your inventory, waiting for your darkest hour. A rainy day, if you will.

Items like…

Dust of Disappearance

The Dust of Disappearance is one of those items that can turn the whole adventure around in the right place. It doesn’t even have to turn up in a fight – this item can be perfect for any rainy day that requires you to be at least a little stealthy. Because it will turn you and anyone within ten feet invisible for 2d4 minutes. It’s a short-lived invisibility, but it can make all the difference.

Elemental Gem

I love these magic items because they are absolutely just a literal “in case of emergency, break glass” kind of item – only in this case, it’s actually a gem. But, it is still eminently breakable. All you have to do is bust the gem and an elemental will appear, and act on its own initiative immediately after yours.

Elementals are no slouch in a fight. And their magical abilities mean even against higher level opponents, an Elemental can still do some damage.

Oil of Etherealness

Sometimes, though, what you really need is a way out. Either out of the prison you’re in, or just off of the current plane of existence for just a little while – maybe you said “you too” when the tavernkeep told you to enjoy your meal and hot doesn’t have feign death prepared.

Enter the Oil of Etherealness. Although it takes you ten minutes to apply, it turns you Ethereal for an hour, per the spell Etherealness. It’s a perfect way to spy, to escape, to infiltrate – it can help on any rainy day when you need to be ethereal.

Iron Flask

In a way, the Iron Flask is a perfect rainy day item. It can solve a multitude of problems. This is because it has two functions, closely related. The first, is that it can, when unstoppered, magically imprison any creature within its confines. Doesn’t matter how big. How powerful. It is just in the bottle until such time as you (or anyone else with acess to the bottle) lets them out.

And the second is, if the flask has something within it, it can be let out. Then, said creature is magically compelled to obey your commands for an hour. Which is verbally long enough to solve most problems – after that hour, though, it’s free to act in accordance to its alignment and disposition.

Ring of Three Wishes

Finally, the classic rainy day magic item. A ring of three wishes. Three changes to reshape reality with the most powerful spell in the game. Hard to pass that one up.

Happy Adventuring!
