Games Workshop has pulled the covers off the new Iron Warriors rules coming with the Eye of Terror books for Warhammer 40,000.

Really, it’s more than just the Iron Warriors. These units are Chaos Space Marines at their core. More than just the Iron Warriors will be able to use the Mutilators and the Defiler. That said, we do get a look at Kravek Morne, which is a special character. So what are these new units bringing to the tabletop? Let’s find out.

All three of these new units go up for pre-order soon, along with the awesome Eye of Terror: Reign of Iron expansion, and some Imperial reinforcements desperately hoping to hold back the Iron Warriors.

Kravek Morne

You can see his stats above, and while he does have some nice weapons, what really makes him stand out is his Architect of Ruin ability. This one lets you single out a unit to be your “hated foe” for the game. This grants Kravek Morne re-rolls to wound against that foe. And when that target DOES get destroyed, he can choose a new hated foe. That seems handy to me!

Mutilators

Up next, we have the Mutilators. They have their Fleshmetal Weapons, which really allow them to be Swiss Army Knives in melee. You can choose the weapon profile that best suits the target of their attack,s making them versatile in combat. You still have to get them there, but at least you’ve got the Crushing Charge ability to re-roll charge rolls. Plus, it gives them a chance at Mortal Wound generation, which is always nice. I also want to call out that Toughness 7 stat. These guys are going to be tough to deal with!

Defiler

The final unit is the Defiler. Not only is the new kit really impressive, but the updated stats on this unit are also something else. I think it’s going to give Chaos Knights a run for their money. You’ve got a TON of weapon options, which isn’t just a cool tactical flex but also a nice hobby challenge. I also like the interaction with Dark Pacts, too. There’s still a chance at a failure and it’s a trade-off for sure. But in the Defiler’s case, it could totally be worth taking the hit for the improved re-rolls to wound.

While this one is teased as an Iron Warrior unit, really, any CSM army can use it. That includes the Cult Legions, too!

Again, depending on your legion, you could go for some very different builds to lean into these abilities. The Death Guard can basically cause a unit to no longer have cover. The Emperor’s Children version is great for softening up tough targets.

The Thousand Sons is great to stick out front to absorb charges and tap into overwatch damage. And the World Eaters is one that will chew up Deepstrikers. Each of these versions swaps out the Dark Pacts/Daemonforge ability to do it, but finding the right niche to fill can make it worth the trade.
