‘Warhammer: The Old World’ – Attending A Really Fun 3K Event
Let’s talk about my time at a recent Warhammer: The Old World 3,000 pt event, using my Bretonnian Exiles list!
The other weekend I got to drive up to Holt, MI, USA, to play in a really fun 3,000 pt event. The event was held at AFK Games and saw 16 players duke it out with extra big armies. I took by old reliable Exiles and had 3 fun games, managing to go 3-0 and take the win. So today lets take a quick look at my army and how the games went.

How The List Plays
This is mostly a variation on the Exiles list I’ve been running for a while. Its got two very hard hitting units. The Peg Knights don’t need a lot of explanation, and have a dangerous Baron to go with them. The other Baron+BSB+Damsel go in the big block of knights and are very very hard to kill, while having buffs to make them quite deadly. There are a couple big infantry units to tie stuff up and 3 cannons to put a lot of pressure on the enemy. I’ve got a number of wizards, mostly to cast buff spells and the occasional magic missile. And it can shut down Fly for 2 turns. I figured with people able to run 3-4 dragons at 3k this would come in handy. It’s not the craziest list, but was partly dictated by what I had painted.

How Game 1 Went

I won’t lie, facing off into 6 Cannons and three Hellblasters was a bit daunting! Luckily there was good bit of cover thanks to a ton of impassable terrain. Jacob got to go first, but it meant his Hellblasters were out of range. 6 Cannons and some Outriders managed to take out one of my Cannons and cost me some knights (both mounted and foot) but nothing I couldn’t survive. On my turn I went all in, do or die, pushing forward with everything and flying the foot knights up. I managed to magic missile away a unit of Outriders.
The gamble paid off. 5 of Jacobs 6 Cannons missed firing into the ground and the Hellblasters couldn’t do enough damage. On my 2nd turn My foot and Peg knights got into his arty and the big bus destroyed the Griffon banner unit. After that is was really just clean up. I managed a 20-0 win in the game. Had the Cannons done a little more I might have been in real trouble, whew.

Round 2 saw me face off vs John Ottman’s Wild Herd.

How Game 2 Went
This was a pretty intense game and I actually only took a single picture during! My bad. From running into 9 warmachines to a host of Vile Tides. However I really had luck on my side this game. It started off with me accidently landing a cannon round on one of his wizards and taking him out. At the same time I pushed up a bit. On his first turn he also miscast with the Dark Coven, dropping a number of templates on himself and killing another wizard. On my right he had a lot of his chariots and razorgors, but I managed to fly up very close with my foot knights and prevented him from getting impact hits.
After clearing out a few light things (and shutting down his flying carpet twice) he charged the big gor block into my Yeomen. This should should have been an easy win for him, but he made the mistake of also charging a Razorgor into my big block of knights and fighting with it first. When I killed it this let me overrun into the flank of his big block and fight again that turn. Just a mistake. On my turn I sent the Peg knights into the other flank of the Gors and wiped them. I was able to clean up for a 20-0 victory again.

How The Game Went
Now Brandon is one of my oldest friends, we even owned a store together in Texas way back in the day (so you could say we both drove from TX to MI just to play each other, even if the drive took a few years). Given that I knew this would be a fun game. And it started out pretty rough with my opening moves doing very little. Meanwhile his early shooting took out half my Peg Knights and he managed to get his Dragon Princes into my foot knights. Over a few turns they took them apart with easy and mopped up my flank.
However I was able to pin his two sky-cutter characters in the back with no fly for a couple of turns. He also made a critical error in placing a unit of Sisters in from of his Swordmasters so I could hit them and overrun in the Swordmasters. On that turn I managed to get Glittering Robes, Battle Lust and Demonic Vigor off on the Knights (the +1 I coming in handy). The Peg Knights hit the big block of Swordmasters and the big knights killed the Sisters and overran into the on going combat, getting to fight again. This destroyed the center of his army.
That wasn’t the end of the game however. My Peg Knights went into the Seaguard and killed them (the champion killing Vess in a duel!). On the other hand his two Sky-Cutters killed by general and drove the big unit of knights back across the table. After some hard fighting and a few more losses, I was able to take out the two cutters, a lucky cannon getting one. This netted me a hard fought 15-5 win, and allowed me to claim victory in the event. A big thanks again to all the wonderful people who played in and ran the event!
