LEGO and trains go together like peanut butter and jelly. These steam powered IDEAS sets just need your vote to become reality!

Von Barron’s Train

This LEGO train set brings together historical trains (including the classic German black and red color scheme) and a story of train robbery hijinks.

This idea came to my mind when I was thinking how to make a train set more interesting while keeping real life inspired elements, and after watching a 1-hour video about the Sam Sinister Switcheroo I thought that LEGO Adventurers was the perfect setting for a train with a story, so I wanted to develop the lore of Baron von Barron with this build.

Light Rail Train

The familiar inner-city commuter train is the focus of this set. This light rail LEGO train has control cabins at both ends and a power block and remote control in the middle car. It also features two different types of masts, one outrigger and the other type of mast with a tensioning function, plus 6 straight tracks.

Modular LEGO Train Station

This modular station is inspired by historical German train stations and has a few details built in, like a ticket booth, an elegant waiting room, a snack bar, and a magazine stand. The tracks out front are ready for an incoming train. The set has around 5,000 pieces and comes with 14 minifigs.

Lionel Blue Comet Train

The Blue Comet was operated by the Central Railroad of New Jersey and was painted blue to represent the seashore. This set is based on the 1930s toy set honoring that iconic train produced by the Lionel Corporation.

The company produced numerous Blue Comet train sets over the years, but the one I consider the most notable and beautiful is the tin-plated standard gauge set, which was manufactured from 1931 to 1939, and headed by Lionel’s 400E steam locomotive. The train set featured a vibrant two-tone blue paint scheme, complemented by brass and copper trim. The sets made in the later years had nickel trim. The passenger cars in the set had removable roofs and detailed interiors, complete with small lavatories. Just like the actual train, the cars were named after comets. This Lionel train set was truly a beautiful spectacle for anyone who laid eyes on it, including me, who was inspired by its vibrant craftsmanship and decided to make a LEGO Ideas submission of it.

Classic Steam Deluxe Mixed Traffic Train Set

Are you a railway enthusiast? This set has everything you need to start a model railroad out of LEGO, including two steam engine pulled trains – one cargo and one passenger. The included passenger station has two platforms, and it also features a coal depot and engine shed that you can place along a loop of customizable track. This set has a lot of details – make sure you check out the full description!

LNER Class A1 ‘Flying Scotsman’

Build the iconic Pacific locomotive with this 2,327 L-gauge-scale set that includes the engine, corridor tender, and a section of track.

The Flying Scotsman is arguably the most iconic steam locomotive of all time, stemming from Gresley’s classic A1 design in 1923, to its record-breaking run in 1934, where it became the first locomotive to officially break 100 mph, as well as run the 392 London-Edinburgh journey non-stop.

LEGO City Train Sets

Want to build a train while we wait for the IDEAS sets to go through the process? LEGO City offers several different modern sets (including three with power blocks and remotes for a real model train experience) plus a track box, so you can expand them.
