Necromunda: Underhive Racing Rules Available Now
Games Workshop has a new batch of rules for all you Necromunda fans who are really into customization for your vehicles. It’s racing time!
One of the many things I like about Necromunda is the (almost) limitless customization you can do. This applies mostly on the hobby side of things as you can really customize your gangers and get crazy with them. Additionally, that also applies to the various vehicles you can bust out. I think Ash Wastes really added a lot to the game but I also think the Book of the Outlands is another great resource as well.
If you have the Book of the Outlands, you’re already familiar with the vehicle customization in that book. Well, now GW has taken that one step further and added more rules to take those crazy contraptions out for a race in the Underhive!
Underhive Racing – Start Your Engines
To get started, you will want the Book of the Outlands for the basic vehicle rules. From there, you’ll want to download the rest of these custom rules direct from GW. The Book of the Outlands isn’t free, but this download is. Inside, you’ll find how to create an Underhive racer and other rules to play in this mode.
One of the cool things about this rule set is that it’s borrowing the concept of a “moving” board from the Rolling Road mission in Ash Wastes. I really loved this concept and I’m liking the tweaks that GW made with this race-style setup. There’s some changes to the rules from Rolling Roads. However the basics are close enough. The racers are moving across the board and to represent moving through the track you’re going to swap out board sections. You can see the rules below but I think this is a really cool way to handle playing this type of game (without having to have a massive tabletop space).
There’s also more rules for randomizing the terrain if you want to go that route, too. Personally, I think it would be fun to create “set” race tracks to keep the themes consistent or at least the racetracks themselves unique. If you really want to, you could even get into making custom terrain for your own race tracks, too.
Most of the gangs now have access to their own custom vehicle now. Or you can just go with some of the more generic options, too. Personally, I think this is a fantastic way to experiment with the various kits and make up your own vehicles using the base rules and letting your imagination run wild.
Keep in mind there’s even rules for Light or Heavy vehicles as well as full race campaigns, too. It’s all relatively simple, but I think this is such a cool way to expand the world of Necromunda. I could totally see a gang going to the track to place some bets and then running into another gang for a street brawl. Really the narrative writes itself with Necromunda. Or maybe they “sponsor” their own racer or something.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got a few Necromunda vehicles that I want take to the track and make car noises with…
Start your engines!
