Warhammer 40K: 11th Edition Worries

Goatboy here again and we have a new edition of 40K coming!  I have some worries for the competitive scene so I thought – let’s list the 3 things I hope GW get’s right with 11th Edition.

I am not doom or gloomer with the new edition as I think where we are with the game is pretty good now and the same team that got the ship in line for 10th is the team working on 11th so I am still very excited.

“Easy Mode” Detachment – Primary Mission Combos?

There could be a solved mission in the new set of primary options based on your army detachment choice.

This is something I always worry about in any new edition, or updated Mission Deck.  The players will find the easy route to victory if they can and allowing the choice to pick your army style might lead to players just picking the easy one.  GW has assured the players that this isn’t the case as they tested things but will just have to see.  The little tidbit they showed this last week had me very excited as a World Eaters player as it showed options to push your narrative style as well as avenues to allow for normal victory points at the same time.  This sort of thing seems pretty great as a way to create a story with how your army wants to work.

Initial Codex Wait

We may have a bit to wait for a couple 11th Edition Codex to see how GW intends the game to work.

There are a ton of rules that are currently staying so we are kind of left in the dark on the new philosophy for 11th Edition from GW.  Are there going to be less rerolls?  Are we going to see more concrete damage options that are no longer d6 and instead something like 3+d3?  Are things going to get tougher or moving towards less things on the field?  Will we see a bigger push to create more distinct rules for each army instead of just small stat updates or army wide reroll 1’s? We wont know that the new Edition is really about with existing 10th Edition codexes being legal, until we get our hands on 2-3 new ones. Until then, it’s just speculation.

Overpowered Mini-Detachments?

I worry that the little mini-detachments might accidentally overpower an army.

There are a lot of detachments in 40K right now and the addition of newer ones that seem more focused and attached to current detachments might be overpowered.  If there was one that supercharged your Battleline and your army has a powerful Battleline option would that be too much for the game?  What if you just had one that added even more bonuses to your army like something on top of the Creations of Bile power ups.  Is just adding more rules on top of your detachment adding too much complexity to the game and removing the old “2 pages of rules” to rule your army?

New 11th Edition Anxiety…

All of these questions will be answered pretty quickly as we get ahold of the game and get some practice within the new cage of rules we get.  I am excited to try these things and think the added detachment might breathe some new life in some units that might otherwise not work so well in their old main detachment. I do worry adding more Enhancements to the mix might be an issue but with a cost involved per GW it should hopefully balance things out.  It might again just let 40K balance itself even more with less models on the table, less interactions, and a faster game hopefully.

~Happy 11th Edition gaming, and only roll 6’s!
