Warhammer 40K: About Those New Imperium Characters – How Good Are Yarrick & Friends?
Commissar Yarrick returns alongside a handful of new 40K Imperial characters. Just how good are they on the tabletop?
Holy heck did GW just dump out a ton of new rules for the Imperium side of things. We got a few brand new ones and a reborn hero for the Astra Militarum – the Old Man. I think all of them are pretty interesting options with a few stand out choices. Will this be a month you have to buy a bunch of stuff to fill out your Imperium army dreams?
Commissar Yarrick
This is the first one to show up and I think one of the few ones that will slam dunk into any Astra Militarum armies. He looks cool and feels just right for the army. He can order a ton of things, has a powerful three set of rules he can choose from, and gets to join a ton of different units. All of these things are powerful options but really it is his three different “rules” he can do in the command phase. The Counterstrategist seems powerful as it allows some out of phase movement options and tricks you can do as someone gets near. I do expect the Order that goes to everyone else within 6” will be powerful and make the Recon Detachment a pain in the butt. Overall I think this guy is gonna show up all the dang time for any Astra Militarum player.
Commissar Graves
Who would have thought we got a new Commissar that is on a tank and sometimes on foot. I think this model looks pretty gnarly with the giant tank and this insane banner. It is an interesting option as it is a “tank” leader that isn’t a super sweet Leman Russ. It does convey the drive me closer so I can hit it with my power sword vibe and instead it is a giant power fist. Her rules seem ok and while it is fun I don’t think will see her nearly as much as the other options. It feels like a model that fits into this funky narrative they want to do and I expect her to shine more in whatever detachment comes out that tries to sell you on all the new tanks.
Intranzia Fraye
We now have another throne character for the Adeptus Sororitas. This is a pretty neat model that should have had some kind of Lone Operative rule if near Sisters Battleline models. The Battleshock aura at -1 could be fun but I feel if she gets too close she will just die to all the massed close combat options we have now and just not being nearly as tough as she should be. The Feel No Pain can help but thankfully it isn’t a 4+. I do like her rule to give to select an enemy unit and your units get Lethal Hits when shooting at that unit. This model feels like a fun one but I don’t know how useful she will be as she can’t truly hide or have enough wounds to take some punches in the face if she gets exposed on the battlefield.
Inquisitor Kroyle
This is the guy we might see a lot. This weird Inquisitor has a pile of rules that make him a powerful addition to your Imperium army. He is going to be a pain to remove with his Lone operative rule as well as his 6” scout ability. After he has shot at the enemy unit he can allow all Imperium Battleline options the ability to reroll hits against that unit. I hear Oath of Moment is pretty good so having one on a stick to just throw out damage seems pretty awesome. Oh and his weird gun if he hits with it he can keep letting it get more powerful all the way to a Damagae 6 shot. This is just a wild amount of damage and something any player has to worry about as he moves around, hits things with his long range rifle, and starts to be really scary with a Precision, Strength 10, Ap -2, and damage 6 gun. This guy will show up for sure and I hope he isn’t too cheap.
The Verdict
There are the 4 new characters for the Imperium coming out at some point this month. They are pretty interesting and when you look at a the Astra Militarum side they even get a bunch of new little tanks to think about as well. It is gonna be a good time to be an Imperium player towards the end of 10th edition for sure.
Which one are you picking up?
