Warhammer 40K: Biggest Unanswered Questions Of 11th Edition
Goatboy here with some thoughts on the new edition and the top 5 questions I have based on the rules previews we have gotten.
I am pretty excited to play the new game. I think the bits we have been given so far by GW are pretty exciting and I just can’t wait to get my hands on those new rules and shiny new figures. Let’s get started.
5. Terrain Visibility
Are we going to see changes in who and what sees through terrain?
I ask this as so far we can see most of the area terrain works the same except we haven’t seen anything about how vehicles interact. All the discussion right now has pointed to Infantry, beasts, and swarms gain rules but nothing about Vehicles gaining anything other than tall Knights getting plunging fire. Do we see the return of toe in and can shoot thru the area? Are vehicles going to gain any benefits from cover? What do our boxes get when battling on the neoprene planets of 40k?
4. The FLY Keyword
The GW examples of terrain show walls being a lot shorter, so does the Fly Keyword change?
The FLY keyword that has been extremely powerful in some past 40K editions will be staying in this one most likely, so what does it do in the game now? Is it still a powerful way to move around the table top? Do we get another other cool rules for strapping wings or a rocket to our back and barreling towards the enemy? Do I need to make more flying Daemon Princes?
3. Missions & the 40K App
Is the 40K App going to have the actual missions in it?
I ask this as something that vexed new players in the latest edition. Is the App going to actually have all the mission information in the game? Are we going to finally have a single App to give us everything we need to battle? Will this be the end all and be all for 40k apps?
2. Assault Phase
Is assault going to change?
This is the phase that can vex new players the most and really showcases the skill level between players most of the time. The Assault Phase is also one of things GW LOVES to overhaul from edition to edition, going all the way back to the 1990s. I do wonder if we are going to see some major changes to this phase? Is the game going to move back to a heavy assault environment as shown by the terrain layout and massive amounts of staging areas?
1. How Exact Are Terrain Feature Borders
Are those “nobbie parts” on the terrain mats needed?
If you look at the new layouts shown you see how each of the terrain maps have some random little bits hanging out of it. I understand from the center piece as it appears the ability to split it in half is important but all the other parts – are they needed? Are we going to see most events just continue to go with a rectangle shape and forgo trying to make things exactly match up the GW layout? Are we going to see sizes move away from the 11.5 sides and just round up to a nice and even 12″. Are we even going to see different terrain layouts anymore as again the game is shifting how you create your mission and table set up?
Are you excited about 11th Edition? I love the little bits of rules we have gotten and think it does wonders to keep the players excited and understand it is still the same game we obsess over. What new army are you excited for and game play shifts they might have?
