The Deathwatch are getting a new Battalion Box for Armageddon. That’s cool but it would be nice if they got a real codex again, too.

I’m going to try to keep the snark at a minimum with this one because I genuinely DO like the Deathwatch. It would be fantastic if they got a rules update/full codex again. That said, I’m not holding my breath on that front. For now, you’ll be stuck using the Faction Pack/Index Deathwatch. I guess that’s better than nothing.

Anyhow, they ARE getting a new Battalion Box which is a great way to splash them in your army/collection. Today, we’re going to take a quick look at the box and see if we can’t figure out what this one is worth.

Deathwatch Battalion Box Pricing Breakdown

Total Individual MSRP = $207

Total Estimated Savings:

  • At $130 = $77
  • At $150 = $57
  • At $170 = $37

Unfortunately, I don’t have a confirmed price yet. That said, I’m betting it’s going to be in that $150 price range which is why I showed off some various price points. The fact of the matter is that the contents total value starts at $207. So just deduct the actual price from that and you can math-hammer out the total savings.

Personally, I still think the Deathwatch are some of the coolest/weirdest Space Marine units around. I really love the concept and lore of them. It’s just too bad they are kind of weird to use.

I also think they lend themselves to smaller games in general. Kill Team for example is perfect for them as you can take a squad of Veterans and play them in those clandestine missions like lore lore alludes to. And maybe that’s why GW hasn’t updated them to a full codex from an Index. That and the Deathwatch Range is kinda of funky, too.

Next Steps For Deathwatch

If you’re really dead-set on making a Deathwatch army, I don’t want to discourage you. However, you’re probably going to hit some roadblocks pretty quick. Again, they are currently an Index/Faction Pack army. With the new edition looming that seems like a risky option. Personally, I think a small force like this (the battalion) is really all you would want to collect right now. Splash them in your other Space Marine armies as a cool “veteran” unit or drop them in another Imperial Army as allies.

But if you’re going for a full Deathwatch army, there’s only so many units to choose from. Point it out and see where you land.

As you can see…your options are limited. You can include other Adeptus Astartes units (think Land Raiders or various other transports) but basic units like Assault Squads are out. Let’s be honest though, if you’re doing a full Deathwatch Army, you’re doing it for the cool shoulder pads! So just go heavy on the Deathwatch Vets and then decide if you want to drive them or air drop them in to combat.

To be fair, depending on the total discount, this Battalion could really offset the price of building that Deathwatch Army. I still think you’re going to have to dip into the regular Space Marine army if you want a fighting chance though. A “pure” Deathwatch Army is a rare thing.
