Warhammer 40K: How Good Are CSM’s New Units?
Goatboy here to dig into just how good the latest three 40K CSM units are going to be on the tabletop! Watch out!
Goatboy here and GW has been kind to give us the points to talk about the new Chaos Space Marine units that will be coming out soon. All of the models are pretty awesome but this is a review of how good they might actually be – on the tabletop. I think the overall winners are the new Defiler – especially for the World Easters and Kravek Morne. Let’s dig into the 3 releases.
Mutilators – Not Quite There
Let’s start with the weaker release in this with the Multilators. Their cost is a bit high for what you get and while I think in a vacuum their rules are fine – they just might not do enough. I think all the profiles need a few more attacks to make it worth it to put these in your army. The 2 attacks on their strong end just doesn’t cut it to help break thru some of the big issue things we see right now in the C’tans and even Dorns. If they came in with 3 attacks each on the big attack, 7 for the medium, and then 10 attacks for the sweep we would have a winner units to at least try out with one of them. I do like their OC2 and overall beefy nature but if you are throwing this many points down you need to get those many points back.
Kravek Morne – Has Potential
The next one to think about is Kravek Morne. He is an expensive Terminator lord with a pile of good rules. I love how many attacks he has mixed with the ability to reroll against his hated foe, getting up to AP -3, and throwing Devastating wounds on top of it. I think the biggest issue is that he needs some friends to hang out with and the best option we have is a unit of 5 Terminators. This gets you an expensive unit that can do some work. It seems to be decent enough into small stuff, can punch up with a pile of powerfists/chainfists, and even shoot a bit with the extra AP they can have. It is an interesting combo and we could see this as a nice little murder unit to throw into a CSM army – especially when putting them into something like Bile to get more attacks or some other fun options.
Defiler – The King is Back, Baby!
The final unit that hits all the Legion armies is the new Defiler. I think this is an important piece to the puzzle for a few of the armies. The overall rules are pretty good between a pile of weapons, a pile of wounds, and a very important ignore terrain movement rule. On the CSM side they could show up in the Soulforged Warpack as a dangerous back piece as well as Renegage Raiders where gaining Assault on all their weapons means this unit is going to be running over buildings, throwing out some haymakers, and just being a pain in the butt. I think the big win in all of this is they got tougher, hit harder, and move better.
I can’t just stop there but the World Eaters one just seems like a huge win for that army. You get a giant mean body that has more attacks, a lot of shooting, and an even faster movement. I think its cheeky little “shoot or charge” ability is pretty fun as it works on anything coming out of a vehicle too. I just like having a body that can throw out a ton of Lascannons shots and have a lot of Claw attacks to help deal with the Necron C’tan menance. I think my plan is to have a shooting platform one and then another that is built to get close with flamers, Magma Cutters, and his chain flail army. This way I have a multiple phased army that mixes these giant brutes with a brutal attack with Exalted Eightbound and then a pile of Berzerkers.
The CSM Verdict
Overall I think the Chaos updates are pretty good. The models look sick, most of the rule are good, and I think most players will invest in a few things. I am happy we got updated rules with the Red Corsair updates and all the other fun stuff coming in the new Campaign book. It is a good time to be a bad guy in 40K right now.
