Warhammer 40K: New Astra Militarum Vehicles Up Close
The Astra Militarum has a pair of new editions to the motor pool. They are bringing the speed with them to the Warhammer 40,000 tabletop!
By now you’ve probably seen the new vehicles the Astra Militarum are getting. They are going to be available in the new Astra Militarum Battalion Box that is going up for pre-order this weekend. We got our hands on them early and they are built in the studio! So let’s take a closer look at these two new fighting vehicles!
Centaur RSV
So I there’s a couple things I really like about this vehicle and something else that bothers me. What I really like about this is that it’s an actual Half-track and not a “Taurox” style quad-track. I’m sorry if that’s your favorite model but I don’t think it makes a lot of sense and I never liked the look of it. The new Centaur looks great and has that nod to real-life vehicles that I can appreciate. It’s still very much a grimdark vehicle of the Astra Militarum though. What’s funny when you think about it in terms of in-game history, the design is basically 38,000 years old…but I guess that’s why the half-track was a work horse.
Anyhow, detail-wise I like the “realism” this one has. there’s a lot of little details like all the firing ports, the engine vents, and the armor plating that I like. The one thing that kind of bothers me a little is that this transport is supposed to carry 12 Astra Militarum Guardsmen. But you can see how much space the two that are in the back are taking up. And yeah, I know, it’s maybe not showing all the space and the scale of 40k has never been perfect (looking at you Space Marine Terminators and the poor souls that have to pilot that armor). Still, it looks like you might be able to cram 6 guardsmen in there safely. I know there appears to be 8 seats…but still.
I still like this a million times more than the Taurox though.
Hippogriff AFV
Anyone else see these guys and think “if Thomas the Tank Engine was a fighting vehicle, this would be it” ?? Just me? Eh, well, that’s how I feel about this little guy. It’s kind of adorable if you ignore the fact that it’s a weapon of war and packs a squad-load of firepower or enough to take out an actual tank with some luck. Just sayin’ Thomas The Tank never killed anyone (allegedly).
The Hippogriff also has other weapon options as well so you can customize it a bit. But overall, I do like the design and the lines on this one. I could see a squad or two of these zooming around causing problems for the enemy. And I think that’s entirely the point. It’s a nice distraction unit with some bite. A cute little bite. Like a Yorkshire Terrier.
It might be a little guy but it packs a wallop!
What do you think of the new AM vehicles joining their motor pool?
