Warhammer 40K: Best of the Best – New Army Detachments – Ranked!
40K got a new release this past week. Take a look at our six new detachments for Orks, Astra Militarum and Space Marines – and which are worth your time.
While we wait on the new miniatures to come out let’s talk about the new detachments we got. I already broke down the one I think is the best out of the 6 with the Armoured Speartip – but let’s do a quick ranking of the new ones. I think some of them are ok but for the most part we won’t see a new shift in the top meta choices for those armies. Still it is always fun to see new rules for your army come out – even if they are not a Chaos one that I would prefer.
We’ll rank with a quick blurb on what I think about them. I won’t go too deep into them as other sites do a much better job than I would do. I will rather look at them and base it on my feelings on if I will see it at some tournament.
1. Armour Speartip – Space Marines
I talked about this one already but this is the best one out of the bunch. This will most likely show up in an event you might go to as it fills in all the things you want an army to do – extremely fast, good tricks, and powerful interactions. I think the only thing keeping it from being the best Marine option is there is no fight on death, a lack of fighting tricks, and can be boxed out by a strong player.
2. Headhunter Taskforce – Space Marines
This is the Marine army that lets you make Tank Aces – which are characters that do stuff. The Marine tanks are pretty good and this lets you make them better. This one might show up as there are armies that like to run a bunch of Repulsors and other fun things. I just don’t think it is the best thing and will probably be forgotten with the other piles of Space Marine detachments. I really hope we get a big clean up of them whenever we get their 11th edition codex.
3. Armoured Infantry – Astra Militarum
I think this one might have some legs as you have some movement tricks for your Astra Militarum. The army has so many options available that are good with the Recon Element probably still being the best but the hardest to truly work well with. I love the ability to have a ton of reactive moves with your army and allowing you to create a truly crazy force that is always moving out of phase. This army will for sure cause players to rethink their strategies while they play so it is probably better left for a strong player willing to move a ton of bodies.
4. Blitz Brigade – Orks
Hey do you like Battlewagons or Kill Rigs? Do you like those things getting extra movement and your Ork friends jumping out of them? Is this an army for someone that wants to push giant Ork nonsense across the field and crash into you? This is the army for you and it really pushes the idea of a Mad Max army of rolling death that will just cross the table so fast. I can see this as a smaller Ork army that is all about the quick pressure into your enemy. If you play this you will want some Scout options to help make sure you are not boxed in.
5. Speedwaagh! – Orks
This is a weird one. I like the upgrades you gives some of your bike characters but its rule that allows you to move really fast as long as it is in a straight line doesn’t always work with the terrain we have now. I don’t think it works that well with the terrain that is coming either. It does have a Stratagem that gives you a +1 to your Damage on Speedfreak units that made a charge and that is something to always think about. Just being able to get some crazy damage output from your Characters that are attached to some bikers is something to seriously think about.
6. Steel Hammer – Astra Militarum
Do you like your Giant Guard tank to be awesome? This is the army for you as you get to make your Tank a giant Character and give it an enhancement. This detachment lets your giant tank shoot into combat and just makes it a heck of a lot meaner. If you love big ole tanks this is the army for you. I feel this army just goes into a different direction than what is currently winning with the Astra Militarum but it is cool to see your tank get an option to throw a leader sticking out the top that wants to get driven closer to the enemy.
Which one is your favorite?
