The Space Marines are getting a new pair of detachments straight from Armageddon. Time to unleash the armored fist of the Astartes!

Most people might not immediately think of tanks when they think of Space Marines. Power Armor usually pops up first which makes sense. But that doesn’t mean the Adeptus Astartes armory is lacking in tanks! Take that same Power Armor Space Marine and stick them in a mobile firebase like a Repulsor and you’ve got one tough target. That’s the direction these two new detachments are going. So let’s see what Armgeddon is bringing the Space Marines!

Space Marine tank crews are already the equivalent of most factions’ elites, so when they become one of the vaunted tank aces among their Chapter, you know they’re among the best in the galaxy.

Headhunter Task Force Detachment

First up we have the Headhunter Task Force. It revolves around Tank Aces that could really give the Astra Militarum a run for their money.

Tanks can get some better movement tricks and damage potential. Additionally, this ability gives up to Tanks the Tank Ace keyword which also allows you to choose to make them Characters. That opens the door for becoming the Warlord. Also, it opens the door for Enhancements like the one below.

Redoubtable Machine Spirit give a tank an 5++ and regens one lost wound a turn. That might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but remember something like a Repulsor’s statline. Another option like Gunnery Honours makes it some you get a bunch of re-rolls as well. That’s not too shabby either! Especially when you also get access to new stratagems.

Kill Shot grants even more re-rolls for your Tank Ace but you can’t combine it with Target Weak Point (which is a mercy for your target). That stratagems boosts the AP of their ranged attacks by 1 when shooting Monsters or Vehicle units. That ALSO seems potent.

These are just a couple of the bonuses the Headhunter Task Force gets. I’m very curious to see what other tricks this Detachment is bringing to the Motor Pool.

Armoured Speartip Detachment

The other detachment is Armoured Speartip and it’s also great for tanks. Although this one is more focused on the transport side of the house.

Actually, if surging ahead with a rolling stampede of transport vehicles is your thing, you’ll love the Armoured Speartip Detachment. Your toughest people-movers get designated as HEAVY TRANSPORT, while your troops practice leaping in and out of vehicles until they can hit the ground running with some extra movement from a Rapid Deployment.

This one really benefits the BIG transports like Land Raiders or Primaris Repulsors. That fixed 3 + D3″ move when exiting a transport is great for positioning just how you need the unit to.  To make your transports just a bit more reliable there’s also stratagems that lean into that playstyle as well.

Machine Wrath lets your Heavy Transports get one final surge of movement before they are removed. Plus if there was a unit still inside they get to auto-pass any Desperate Escape tests, too.

Purgation Doctrine also helps a disembarking unit perform more consistently in the shooting phase, too. You get a +1 to hit and, if the unit exited a Heavy Transport, they also get a further +1 to wound. That should make your units even deadlier than normal.

There’s also the enhancements to consider. If Liberator is any indication of the rest of the enhancement options then Heavy Transports are going to be fantastic options in this detachment.

Yep, you’ll be able to maintain control of a objective marker even if you move away from it. That’s great for units that want to stay in their transports and just keep advancing.

I think these are nice teasers but I’m very curious about the rest of the options. I’m also thinking that certain Marine Chapters will be more inclined than other to dabble with these detachments. If you’re a bit of a Tread Head but still love Power Armor then these are right up your alley!
