D&D: Five Magic Weapons That Will Also Keep You Safe
There’s no denying the power of a magic shield – but if you’re lucky, the right kind of magic weapon can help keep you safe too.
Magic items can add a wide range of capabilities to any D&D character. Everything from letting even the most mundane character hurl a fireball, to providing you with a portable magical tower. And of course, magic weapons. Which normally just add to your damage or the like, but a rare few can also help keep you safe.
Which ones, you ask?
Defender
Defender is probably the most obvious weapon in the list. It does exactly what it says on the tin: it defends you. It has been around since the earliest editions and is a mechanic that rewards people who don’t have a hard time hitting. You can trade away points of your to-hit bonus and instead gain that bonus to your AC, allowing you to add up to a +3 to your AC if you decide.
Luck Blade
Luck Blades are another great weapon. They can help keep you safe when you don’t even have them in hand. As long as a Luck Blade is on your person, you gain a flat +1 bonus to all your saving throws. But on top of that, you can also use its power to reroll one failed D20 test (which can also help keep you safe). And if that fails, you’ve got 1d3 Wishes available with every Luck Blade.
Enspelled Weapon
A newer weapon, but still extremely handy. Enspelled Weapons are capable of holding a single spell and allowing the wielder to cast them without needing a spell slot or anything. Which means you can have a sword that lets you cast Shield. And there’s a kind of poetry there.
Sword of Life Stealing
In D&D, having hit points can count for a lot more than your AC. And a sword of life stealing will help you to have more hit points, by occasionally stealing them from creatures that you hit. You’ll gain 15 temporary hit points whenever you crit, and that can make a huge difference, especially if you have a reliable way of fishing for them.
Holy Avenger
Of course, one of the ultimate defensive magic weapons is the Holy Avenger. This weapon is an expression of pure magical goodness, and it will not only keep you safe, but it’ll also keep your friends safe, because it emanates a protective aura that wards both you and any of your nearby friends from magical harm.
And that’s just a handful of magic weapons that will also keep you safe!
