Hasbro-WotC has officially canceled another video game project. This time, it’s the one from Jedi Fallen Order director Stig Asmussen.

For a company that claims that the future of gaming is all digital all the time, Hasbro-WotC sure does love to cancel development on video games. The latest was a promising title being developed by Giant Skull, headed up by God of War 3 and Jedi: Fallen Order/Survivor director Stig Asmussen, announced last June. WotC once called this project “a definitive moment” for its gaming ambitions. And to be fair, nothing seems to be more definitive of WotC/Hasbro’s gaming ambitions than canceled projects.

WotC Cancels Another In-Development Game

The news comes from Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, who reports that Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro have officially canceled the publishing deal with Giant Skull, less than a year after announcing it. The proposed game would have been a sprawling single-player campaign, with a focus on “a rich new Dungeons & Dragons universe filled with immersive storytelling, heroic combat, and exhilarating traversal.”

And if you’ve played the Jedi games, you know exactly the kind of puzzle platforming you might’ve expected. Though now, WotC has opted out of the deal with much less fanfare.

According to Schreier, a WotC spokesman said that the game was still an early concept:

“We assess concepts at every stage of development. While we decided not to pursue an early concept from Giant Skull, we have great respect for Stig Asmussen and his team and value our ongoing relationship.”

Hard to imagine it being anything, but an early concept under a year out from the initial announcement. Especially since this was one of the games that the WotC internal D&D video game development team was created to help with. Though WotC still has presumably many pixelated irons in the digital fire, including the video game studio in Montreal it opened last September, right next to the other video game studio it already owns.

Still, the news isn’t all gloom. Especially since, according to Schreier, WotC is still considering pitches from the Giant Skull team. And Asmussen himself says that “things are good” at Giant Skull.

Though with the recent closure of another of WotC’s gaming studios, Atomic Arcade, what exactly the digital future of WotC looks like is anyone’s guess. It seems an awful lot is resting upon the shoulders of the upcoming Exodus.

Hopefully we still get a D&D game from Giant Skull – Jedi: Fallen Order and Survivor remain some of my favorite modern Star Wars games!
