Old Hammer 40K – Old School Dreadnoughts The Game Needs Back
Goatboy here. There was a time 40K had a ton of different Space Marine dreadnoughts to pick from. Here’s a few GW could revive with a single small Dreadnought Upgrade sprue!
Goatboy here with some old hammer nonsense to talk about. Back in the day, 40K had a ton of both plastic and Forge World Dreadnought kits for you to enjoy having a hero locked in a walking coffin. Right now there isn’t a whole lot of options to choose from so I thought – what hero Dreadnoughts could we have back with a simple Sprue Upgrade kit thrown into the Redemptor dreadnought box. I still remember that cool Apocalypse Command Vehicle Upgrade Sprue from 2007 for all the factions in the game (see above). Something like that…
Chaplain Dreadnought
You can’t tell me their never threw in one of their crazy religious leaders in a walking Coffin and threw them into battle? This used to be one of the bigger pains in the butt in older 40K games as it was a character option that got the character – can’t shoot rule, relics to choose from, and was most likely a Iron Hands version to deal with. I can say it would be an easy thing to add this to game and get you a character kit that would look awesome on the table, most likely a skull face to pick from, and maybe some cool aura rules to throw out to their fellow Space Marines they are hanging out with. These used to be Forge World upgrade kits, and had a moment years back.
Librarian Dreadnought
This used to be one of the important kits for the Blood Angels as you got a cool little librarian that could be a bit punchy with Wings of Sanguinus (Gave them fly) and then some cool extra punching powers. I could easily see this one come bask as a way to bring some cool looking flavor and character to your Space Marine armies. You could expand their powers based on the Chapter they are in with weird storm powers for the Space Wolves, righteous aggression for the Blood Angels, and even just aura protection for the Space Marines/Ultramarines.

Captain/LT Dreadnought
A cool character that gives out some of the Captain options would be a neat thing to have access too. It would just give another cool option for the army and something fun to build a character out of. You could let it do some cool auras off of it – with the reroll ones or even just reroll charges and other fun things. It is just a cool option to create something that doesn’t need to join up with models and can create little heroes that run around.
Techmarine Dreadnought
The ultimate Final Form(tm) for a Techmarine is to be encased into a robot body and live forever as a machine of destruction. Or it could just be a true leader of the machines that let the Marines boxes of doom run. I just think it would be a cool opportunity to create another unique character to add to the army and something that fits into the Marine options that isn’t just another Primaris Marine with a fancy new helmet.
