Warhammer 40K: Armageddon Box Set Reveal – Best of the Best
Goatboy here with some excitement about the new 40K Armageddon boxed set coming your way soon. Here’s what really matters in there.
We got to see the big Armageddon set unboxing last week, and today I want to talk about the things that excite me the most – and it isn’t a new Space Marine. Well, it might be a few Space Marines, but that is ok – we all can secretly love some of the Space Marines. This is especially true for me, as my attacks remove them from the table top.
Well, we got to see the new minis, see the box get opened, and get hyped for a new game. I want to talk about the things that excite me the most from this reveal, as well as what the future might bring with the upcoming new launch. It looks like a pretty awesome boxed set – especially if you are an Ork or Marine player.
You Can Play the Game Out of the Box
The big thing I got out of this reveal is that this box gives you everything you need to actually play the game. You get a nice new mini rule book (hooray and about time!), the mission cards, narrative cards, and even the unit cards. This is a big thing for any new edition, and I think with the changes we saw in 10th and what feels like continued updates for 11th, this boxed set will stay important for a while. I enjoyed refreshes to the competitive scene, but if these rules and overall parts stay relevant for a year +, that would be awesome.
New Ork Units
On to the models they showed us. I think the big exciting thing is the new “units” shown. I love the refresh of the little Ork Wartrakk as well as the new Big Mek Dakkarig. Both of these units are really nice to look at and bring some more ramshackle nonsense to the Ork party. I was hoping we would see some Ork Bikerz, as you know, a refresh is coming at some point. All the Orks look good with a new shift in their overall design.
They feel blockier and more humanoid-like instead of the old gorilla design we used to have. I think that is a nice shift into making a bit more unique-looking models that shift them from other games and designs. There are a lot of sharp edges too on the Orks, which I think works and kinda shifts them into the Orc Brutes from AOS. Overall, it looks great even though we had to sit through a week of Gretchen to get there.
New Marine Units
Onto the Marine side of things, everything looks good and Marine-like. I love the idea of the Blast Heavy Bolters on the Eradicators, which feel like a nice little shift. This will work well in the new game, where all that AP -1 nonsense will be especially brutal. You can expect big units to just disappear under the hell that is Eradicator Heavy Bolter fire. The new Intercessors are fine, but since they are not a massive shift from the ones we have now, I can expect most players to keep their 5-10 they use in their armies to stick an objective or two. The new Vanguard Vets, though, are pretty spot on and a nice upgrade to the army as a whole.
Of course, the most important thing is the new little Land Speeder. I wonder if they will be as much of a pain to build as the old ones that usually needed a few rubber bands to hold together. I do think nice small things like this that you could add to your biker units look a heck of a lot better than the little ATV vehicle we have now. It sounds like they are pretty cheap and probably will be the important thing in this boxed set.
An exciting thought in this is having the new little mini boxes that come out after a release show up with what I hope are some nice choices in them. It would be amazing to see the mini rulebook, Land Speeder, and Ork vehicle to show up in them. We will just have to wait and see when they finally come out.
The biggest miss from this box is not putting in the dope Kill Team dice we had in one of the older boxed sets. Those nice brown and orange dice with harder square edges were amazing. I gave mine to my buddy Rob at Tabletop Battles to ensure he had a better set. He still yells at them, but the dice do much better most of the time. I don’t know about you, but I am very excited to get my greedy little hands on this new boxed set and get to playing 11th edition.
So my fellow fanatics, how many Armageddon Boxes are you picking up?
