Marvel: Crisis Protocol – Kang The Conqueror Needs More Cronies
Kang the Conqueror needs some of his infamous cronies to help him really steal the show on the tabletop in Marvel: Crisis Protocol.
While I’m pretty distracted right now by the arrival of the Sentinel’s new wave of miniatures I’m still looking to circle back to Kang and his crew. I still think he’s got potential to really cause some problems, but he’s difficult to really master. Plus, getting the timing down for when to trigger what card is a bit of an art form. That said, I really believe that if you can master that time hijinks mini-game, he becomes scary as an opponent.
However, I have also come to realize that he’s really missing *something* in his kit. I realized it as I was playing the Sentinels and noticing how much more of a complete faction they feel like now. But I think AMG knows that. And I also think they have a plan to fix him. Oh, and that plan is already in motion.
The Obvious Fix? More KANG!
I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Kang the Conqueror is going to be “the big bad” in one of the new upcoming Marvel: Crisis Protocol Alliance boxed sets. If you’re not familiar with this new spin on MCP, don’t worry… it’s not out yet. It was previewed at AdeptiCon, and the first boxed set is coming out later this year. That’s the good news. The bad news is that we’ve got a longer wait for Kang to arrive.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t the most excited for the Attack of the Sentinels box. But I also think that Kang’s really going to come into his own when this box drops. Why? Because of the variants he’s getting. I also am hopeful that this box isn’t just going to have cards for standard MCP for the characters, but I’m really hoping AMG adds new rules for Kang and the other variants in the box.
Now, depending on your point of view, that could be good or bad. Good because we get more character rules for standard games of MCP! Bad because now that box is going to be “mandatory” for anyone who wants to play Kang. As far as we know right now, these boxes are basically just alternate sculpts for these characters. But again, Kang is weird. He’s one of the few characters in Marvel that actually does run around with an army of variants of himself at his side.
And if you’re wondering who those characters are, I’ve already written about Kang’s complicated history. It’s a brief summary. But it touches on Rama-Tut and Immortus and their relation to Kang.
The Other Fix? More Cronies
It’s not just more Kangs that are needed. Although there are certainly a few more variants that could be added to the mix. Aside from the Scarlet Centurion, there are also other characters like Ravonna Renslayer who could be added. She’s Kang’s love interest, and that’s also super complicated. I’m not even sure which image to add of her because that has been changed over the years, too.
But you know another (sometimes) ally? Doctor Doom!
Okay, I know this is kind of like cheating. Because who doesn’t want DOOM in Marvel: Crisis Protocol?! But Kang and Doom have a complicated relationship, to say the least. They’ve probably aided each other as many times as they’ve been at each other’s throats! Kang can’t kill Doom because he *might* be a distant descendant of Doom. So, if he kills Doom, then he may not get born. But if can’t be born, then how does he kill… And now you see why we don’t think about this one too hard.
Why doesn’t Doom kill Kang? Great question! He has before. But probably due to plot and/or time shenanigans, it doesn’t always stick. I blame the multiverse. There’s also the fact that Kang is another evil genius with time-travel powers. Which uh…does make it tricky to “kill” Kang.
Aside from those two heavy hitters, there’s also a bunch of other cronies that could be added to the mix. And that’s really what I wanted to get at. Characters like Arno Stark, Baltag, Sir Raston (the OG Black Knight), Tempus, and more would fit the bill. Again, Kang has TIME TRAVEL powers. He’s had a LOT of minions and cronies over the years. AMG could pull any of them into the mix.
I don’t think Kang is weak in his current form. I just don’t think he can do it all by himself. While he does have access to loads of allies in the Cabal Affiliation already, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea to add in some Kang-specific ones, either.
How would you “fix” Kang without a total rework (which I don’t think is needed). What allies do you run with Kang in Cabal?
