Marvel: Crisis Protocol – New Affiliations & Where To Expand Next
The roster of Marvel: Crisis Protocol is jam-packed with Heroes and Villains. But there’s still plenty more to add.
With the arrival of the latest batch of Sentinels and a new Crisis Card pack, I’ve been wondering where AMG can go from here. Sure, I’m excited about Marvel: Crisis Protocol Alliances. In fact the UK Games Expo had even more info about the game:
But while MCPA looks like a great gateway game and a fun/chill game night with the family (especially ones with younger gamers out there) I’m still wondering what’s next for Marvel: Crisis Protocol. While Red Hulk is ushering in the Thunderbolts faction and The Leader is bringing on Intelligencia, I can’t help but wonder who’s next after that. And sure, there’s always the wishing for the Fantastic Four, Doctor Doom, and Galactus…but that feels like a gimme. So I wanted to reach back into the history of Comics to figure out who ELSE Atomic Mass Games can bring to the tabletop in a meaningful way.
That said, I didn’t just want to hit on Affiliations. There’s an entire Multiverse out there to explore. Frankly, we’ve already started to get some of that thanks to the Spider-Friends. So here’s a mix of characters that are already in the good ol’ 616 and a other Universes to explore.
The Eternals
I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t mind if we got the movie or the comic book version of these characters. I think either option would be a great addition and a (basically) ready-made Affiliation for the tabletop. Some of them might be a tad overpowered …but maybe not! I trust the rules folks at AMG to tweak them (ruleswise) to capture the essence of these characters without breaking the game.
The Ultimates Universe
Honestly, this is kind of a twofer. I could be talking about Earth-1610 or I could be referring to the new Ultimates universe of Earth-6160. It’s complicated “Because Comics!” I’m not even going to get into how an evil version of Reed Richards (the Maker) got from Earth-1610 to Earth-6160. That’s not the point. The point is that both universes had some great alternate versions of the main-616 characters and , if nothing else, it would make for an excellent well to tap for alternate versions for MCP.
Squadron Supreme
Call them a pastiche or homage from Marvel to DC. This group is a whole lot like the Justice League, but in Marvel. They’ve got a long history and there’s been a few iterations of them. But what I like about the idea of them in MCP is that they come as a ready-made Affiliation. They’ve also got a roster that can grow over time for even more options. Then again, if the Eternals are a tad overpowered, I think the Squadron Supreme could be a REAL problem…
Age of Apocalypse
Oh the 90’s. This version of the future is essentially a “What If…” Apocalypse wasn’t stopped because Professor was killed in an alternate timeline. It’s kind of nuts. What I really liked about this story arc the most was really the reimagining of classic X-Men characters – both heroes and villains. The designs were/are very 90’s XTREME but in a way that kind of makes sense for the story they are presented in. Again, this might be a great way to bring in some familiar/existing characters with new rules and alternate sculpts. Just tossing that out there if AMG is listening…
Marvel: 2099
I’ve actually written about a few 2099 characters previously that I think could join the tabletop. But with Spider-Man 2099 already in the game, I’m just going to point out that there’s still TON of characters from that alternate/future timeline that could make an appearance. It’s another fertile ground for ideas and characters and the door is already cracked. It could be a lot of fun!
There’s still a multiverse of characters out there to explore in Marvel. What Affiliation or alternate Earth would you like to see brought to MCP?
