This Year’s Free RPG Day Is Gonna Be Huge
This coming Saturday, June 27th, is Free RPG Day; and what a feast it’s going to be, with everything from Vampire to Cosmere and beyond.
Free RPG Day is around the corner, folks, and it’s looking like a good one. There’s so much to try, with titles ranging from big-name RPGs like Vampire the Masquerade and Daggerheart and the Cosmere ouevre, to weirder, indie-er titles like Kaguya Protocol and Wizard Bikers and Legend in the Mist. And that’s just a taste of what’s on offer. Let’s check it out.
Free RPG Day Coming This Saturday
Free RPG Day is a celebration of play. Of creativity. Of the many worlds that gaming lets us explore. It began in 2007, inspired by Free Comic Book Day. And like its comic book sibling, it’s a way to try out a bunch of different games that you might otherwise not have picked up.
This year’s crop of free RPGs has everything from one shot adventures, to quickstart sets and samples of whole new RPGs that are still in development. So whether you’re looking for a new adventure to play, or a brand new game to try, you’ll find something fun at this year’s Free RPG Day.
Here are some of the things we’re excited about this year:
- Legend in the Mist – Try out a Quickstart version of the highly-anticipated “rustic fantasy RPG” and spin a tale of hapless villagers setting out on quests into a world full of peril and mystery, with a unique character creation system that will have you coming back for more
- Wizard Riders – A Quickstart sample of a new RPG coming from Catalyst Game Labs, where you get to play as Wizard Bikers who rule the roads of a far-future world; magic and motorcycles and metal mix together to make the kind of stuff you’d see airbrushed on the side of a van
- The Cosmere RPG: Law And Obligation – A One-Shot adventure for 3rd-level characters set in The Stormlight Archives showcasing the Cosmere system, if you want to get your feet wet in Brandon Sanderson’s worlds, this is a great way to try
- Vaesen: The Archivist’s Curse – A Quickstart/One Shot booklet with all the rules and an adventure you need to try out Free League’s RPG of Nordic Horror set in the late 1800s
- The Kaguya Protocol – An Adventure for CBR + PNK that embraces the kind of stuff you’d see in an anime anywhere from 1997-2009, where you play as descendants of ancient Shinobi Guardians in the year 20XX (or 20X6 as I like to say), who are tasked with infiltrating the mansion of a Trillionaire and escorting Kaguya back to the moon
- Tradition of Destruction – An Adventure for Vampire: the Masquerade that puts you in the heart of a plot full of murder and revenge – you know, all the typical stuff you’d expect to find in a good session of any World of Darkness game
- Pirate Borg: Terror in Tortuga – A Sandbox Adventure for PIRATE BORG that gives you everything you need to set sail and raise the black flag, including a preview of the upcoming Dark Caribbean Campaign Setting
