Geekery: The First Dark Tower Trailer is Here

The first trailer is finally here – and Idris Elba’s Roland is at it’s center.

Yesterday Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey started the story…

Today we got the first look…

A pumped up version of Ennio Morricone’s pocket watch theme from For a Few Dollars More is used as backing music. A subtle call back to the Sergio Leone’s classic spaghetti westerns that inspired King to create Roland – who is definitely the focus here.

The movie is a mash of sequel and retelling of the 8 novels – not a direct translation, but it pulls from the source material. One of Roland’s seminal lines from the series – “I kill with my heart.” – features strongly here. It feels like director Nikolaj Arcel and the project’s writers understand and kept to the core of the universe.

The story drops us into the world of The Dark Tower via Jake Chambers – a kid that resides in our world that realizes that the stories of the gunslingers are real, and a massive battle against evil is about to take place. He meets Roland and the two set out to protect the tower from the Man in Black.

The Dark Tower hits theaters August 4th

    That looked disappointing.

  • “The movie is a mash of sequel and retelling of the 8 novels”
Sure, because mashing 8 novels into one movie worked so well in the past.

Not, like, all at once. The first movie is supposed to draw on multiple books, but they aren’t trying to tell the whole story in one film.

I haven’t read any of the books, but that trailer looks like a mess. Having the name Sony before the credits doesn’t inspire confidence either.

I’m still looking forward to it. I know that it’s never going to do the books justice and this is a new take on it, so in a way that helps take away The disappointment factor. The only way they’ll ever do the series properly is to run a miniseries like Game of Thrones.

Actually this is a sequel to the books, not an adaptation, and if you’ve read all the way through the series you know why. Which gives it pretty much free reign to tell the story in a completely different way. http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c1aa34f6f31ab1ba76cf81ea7dae26e9c5b75580420d29484590b4469aa7a91a.jpg

I have a friend that never finished reading the books and I’ve told him you’re not going to understand what the significance of the horn means. For this reason I’m not terribly upset about this being more of a sequel and not following the books. My hope is that the movie does well enough to build up interest in the DT world and spawn another round of movies that do follow the book.

I LOVE Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. I cant wait for this!

  • BrassWitch

That looks convoluted, fitting for something based on SK’s work I suppose.

  • Alexis Thouin Bourdeau

Idris Elba as Roland ? Someone older and grittier would be more fit for the role.

    • orionburn

This was always a role for Clint Eastwood, or at least someone cut from the same cloth. It’s a shame this movie couldn’t have been made when Clint was in his 50s.
