Im building a Desert table for Legion, but I can see tossing a Hoth mat on there to change things up…keeps me from building a Hoth table lol

    • ZeeLobby

Haha. Yeah. We’ve pretty much gone full mat at this point. None of my group has like permanent basement space, so we’re always rotating around, folding tables (some nice 3×3 plywood with hinges), etc. And just throwing mats on top. We’re finally getting enough terrain together to have like snow terrain for the snow mat, and desert terrain for the desert map, etc. I’m glad these mats came along. While there’s nothing like a fully molded and varied elevation table, I won’t have one of those til I one day get my dream house, haha.

      • Xodis

Yeah I created a Desert Table on MDF back when I bought into WWX, so now that I got rid of all of that Im changing up the table a little, but not too much effort is required. Going to place it in Anchorhead to give Luke a reason to try and take it back from the Empire.

What Ive found most useful from bouncing around a lot in the military is taking a MDF board, gluing a large chunk of Pink Foam to it so I can make trails and other slight terrain features then having a lot of modular terrain features to mix it up. Keeps it lightweight and easy to store. Luckily Im out of the military with a house now so I can just get stupid with terrain lol

Yeah. That’s awesome. Hopefully i’ll be there one day. I really want a fully fleshed out 3D table to play on. I’d love to somehow make one recessed into a normal table so games could be stowed away. We’ll see, hehe.

          • Xodis

Ive seen videos on how to make those and its part of my bucket list. Really though with everything I need to paint (and Im a slow painter) I enjoy just making boards to play on. I can do that quickly enough that I feel accomplished…which leads to me not getting my models done, its an endless cycle lol

Hey man, hobby is hobby. I have enough trouble doing anything hobby related. The crazy thing is I bought a 3D printer, and have printed a ton of 40K/Infinity/Legion terrain, and it’s still all neon green plastic, cause while I can print 50 things in a month, I paint none of it due to lack of energy, lol. So you’re way above me.

          • Xodis

How are you liking the 3D printings? I keep hearing about them and with people making all sorts of Legion scenery and putting out the plans I’ve been very tempted.

          • ZeeLobby

It’s pretty damn sweet. I picked up a Powerspec printer from Micro Center (basically a FlashForge Dreamer made by FlashForge with some inferior parts/design at a cheaper price). And once I finally got it calibrated and such, it prints like a dream. I’ll take a pic of some of the scenery I’m currently printing and post it here this evening.

The upside is it’s pretty well detailed, and once it starts you just let it go and occasionally make sure your house isn’t on fire.

The downside is that post-printing sanding or smoothing is a pain in the but, and if you don’t the sides of stuff have the little layer ridges. With ABS you can use evaporating acetone to melt them smooth, but then biuldings look very organic. But yeah, you can’t really drybrush them or it picks up every ridge. Maybe airbrush and keep details light, or use some epoxy to smooth it all, but in the end I just airbrush and done. Trying to build up a ton of options and it looks pretty solid.

          • Xodis

Yep…Im getting that itch again lol. I might as well turn my entire garage into a Miniature Wargaming Studio at this point hehe.

Lol. It is a dangerous game! Here’s the stuff I printed over the past couple of days. Backed 2 kickstarters for the 3D designs. Was about $100 total for designs. But enough to spend a year printing and fill a house with terrain. Ink’s pretty cheap, and this is medium resolution. Landing pad with brace on the right, modular buildings in the back, some other square cube boxes for infinity, etc. I just bought whatever plastic was cheapest, so ignore the color, lol.

          • Xodis

Dude, thats awesome. I didnt think home printers could look that good really. Showed my wife and I think its enough for her to let me start pricing some lol Thanks!

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah. Def give it a shot. My only recommendation would be to get one with a heated bed. It makes a world of difference. That and stuff from this company for the build plate is amazing (below). It took me a couple late nights to get everything balanced and calibrated, but now it’s pretty set and forget

But yeah. Have fun if you get one. And def post some results!

  • Nosebleed

If there isn’t any high ground on Lava Planet, you ain’t playing it right.

  • Patriarch

These look great. Is 6′ x 3′ standard for Star Wars Legion? Presumably its easier to fit that size on most dining tables, but 40K has been 4′ across for as long as I can remember.

    • Bri B

Yeah, that’s a strange business decision. Unless they already make these designs in 4×6.

      • ZeeLobby

        Pretty sure they do.

    • ZeeLobby

Yup. Legion size. And it’s great for dining room tables. Even better you get elbow space on a 4×6.
