Dark Eldar Modeling – Part 2 – Air superiority

 by Philip Henderson

Philip here following up on Part 1 of my ongoing Dark Eldar conversions.  With the new Dark Eldar codex there are lots of new unit options, but for me the most noticeable are the new flyers that can move faster than anything else out there (excluding apocalypse) and unload a tonne of firepower at speed with their one shot missiles.

Whilst there are some good Forge World options out there, I couldn’t resist converting up some plastic pirate planes of my own.

The non-forge world choices for eldar flyers are fairly limited and I eventually decided that some decent sized wings were available by cutting up the eldar falcon chassis.

Unusually for my conversions, these are actually quite effective as far as TLOS goes, being low to the ground and relatively compact.

Razorwing

The razorwing was my first attempt at a dark eldar flyer made from a vyper, falcon wings found on a bits site and then carefully sawn off from the hull, and a pile of eldar, dark eldar and other bits from my bits box. It was a bit of an evolutionary design and I’d probably make a few changes if I started again but I’m pleased with the result, it feels fast and lethal, but fragile, like the dark eldar should be.

The glowy green colour scheme is designed to fit with my haemonculi troops from the last article.

Void Raven

Having practiced a bit with the razorwing, I wanted to make my void raven using a single kit if possible. This model is mostly the eldar fire prism, with a few spare dark eldar spiky bits from raiders, reavers etc. Apart from the void lances, which were a pain, it wasn’t too tough to convert.

It’s designed around the fire prism turret using the same wings as the razorwing, such that they look like different aircraft from the same basic design and I think they look pretty good together, as well as complementing each other tactically.

Scourges

To finish off my aerial units, I’ve also converted a few scourges using daemonette, warrior and sanguinary guard parts, as well as green stuff beaks for the faces.

I’ve tried to replicate the codex picture as much as possible.

Comments and questions are of course welcome. If you want to see some construction shots you can find them in the Lounge here. Good hunting.
