WFB: Of Lords and Generals in 8th Edition

2 Minute Read
Jan 21 2011

One of the major changes to 8th Edition is the way characters are purchased. Lets take a look at how some the armies have adapted.

With 625 points to buy Lords in a 2500 point game (the standard locally), even Warriors of Chaos can work two Lord choices into a list. What this means is that no army is stuck with their General and best fighter being the same character – your can now afford to purchase a General who hangs back, providing Leadership to your forces, while another (or several) other Lords get into the thick of the fighting.

Here are some of the interesting Lord choices we have seen locally in response to the 8th edition rules (some are very effective, others are just fun):

The Undying Dark Elf Irritant – Dark Pegasus, Great Sword, Armor of Darkness, Pendant of Khaleth, and Crown of Command.

This Lord has a 1+ armor save, a ward save equal to the strength of the attacks against him, is stubborn on a 10, 4 S6 attacks, 2 S4, and a S4 stomp. He is used to jump on a large block of enemy troops and hold them in place, likely for the rest of the game.

Goblin Avalance – Goblin Warboss with Great Weapon (often on a Wolf).

The diametric opposite of the Dark Elf Lord, these Goblins come in swarms of 4 or 5 Warbosses with a stack of similarly armed Big Bosses along for the ride. This is more of a comedy that a great threat, but against Init 3 or 4, these guys are deadly when the Waaagh spell is considered.

Bouncing Night Goblin Ball – Night Goblin Warboss, Riding a Great Squig, with Fencer’s Blades, Glittering Scales, and Effigy of Mork.

Bloodthirsters hit this guy on 6s, which is pretty darned funny in our book.

The Brothers Slaan – One Life Slaan with Mystery, one Death Slaan with Mystery and Rumination.

These two give you all the spells of Life and Death to choose from, and extra dice to throw into burning down all the enemy characters on the board.

Oldblood Duelist – Great Weapon, Armor of Destiny, and Venom of the Firefly Frog.

This Lord backs up a deadly Slaan Mage Priest and provides some very durable and effective combat ability to bolster the Lizardmen lines.

High Elf Ghost Archmage – Talisman of Saphery and Folariath’s Robe, often in a unit with Banner of the World Dragon.

Very little in the game has a chance of hurting this guy (aside from his own miscasts). Sure, we saw this Lord sometimes in 7th Edition, but being able to have a solid Prince in addition to this Archmage means you no longer have to choose.

Empire Wizard Lords – Previously, only very odd lists would have Wizard Lords, as the Empire often couldn’t afford the Leadership hit. Now Wizard Lords are viable and hit the field.

~So lets hear about some of your best Lord choices and how you equip them in 8th. The floor is open Generals of the Old World.
