Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”

Here is this week’s top 5!

The 11th Company – Episode 101

Highlights: The gang is back after an unscheduled technical difficulty filled week off! The show opens up with ‘This Week in Gaming’ where Steven and Neil fly solo as they discussed Neil’s new Necrons. They go over some of what he has learned about the army and what tactics he is picking up after some on the table experience. Next up was a new segment called ‘The Battle’, where Neil and his Necrons took on Pat with his Blood Angels in a live-play game. They start off by going over their lists and talk some about what they will be trying to do. This then moves on to a turn-by-turn review of the match, where they gave an overview of each of their turns and their results. Then, still in ‘the Battle’, Neil, winner of the first game, takes his Necrons into battle against Steven’s Mech IG army. Again, the guys do a rundown of their lists and a turn-by-turn review of the game as it happens. Imotehk and his Night Fight fun was a huge factor in this game. Then in ‘Pat’s Corner’, Pat has an interview with Goatboy, and they discuss the reasons why he is giving up Grey Knights and going back to his Space Wolves. They also discuss new Chaos Legions rumors and the Forgeworld Dreadnaught kit. Next, Pat has an interview with Paul Murphy, who is currently ranked #1 in the country on RankingsHQ with his Blood Angels. They discuss his outstanding Blood Angels list and what he does with it to compete on the battlefield. This included all of the counters he has built into it against other top lists. Then, Pat has an interview with Adam Gati of the blog ‘the Spirit Chamber’ and they discussed Eldar Wraithlord tactics. Adam discusses why you would field this unit and what makes it still viable in the current meta. Next up, Eric is back with ‘Tactical Terrain’ and they open up with a brief look back at the year of 2011. Here, they played some ‘best of’ clips from previous segments as a highlight reel of the year. In the community segment, Pat Interviews Shane of the ATC (America Team Championship) and they discuss their event and how it works. Pat then talks to Liam from Battlecult, a company who has a tournament running service for pay. Then, Pat talks to Vlad of the blog Wolfs for the Wolf God and they talked about his efforts in the Killzone rule set. To close out the show, we return to the Codex Countdown of Imperial Armor Apocalypse: Second Edition and this week they cover the Ork unit selections from this book.

Opinion: It was a tough week last week for me without my daily dose of the 11th Company, so I am glad they are back this week. This was a good episode, and I really liked the new segment ‘the Battle’. We often have heard they game coverage in ‘This Week in Gaming’ but to hear it live was so much more fun. I still wish they would record these games with their Nova Open rig and make them available for the world, but this is a close second. Nice work guys! Loving the Imperial Armor coverage as well.

Highlights: This week the guys do their review of the year 2011 in the world of 40K. They open up the show with ‘The Workbench’ where they discussed what hobby work they have been working on and some of the games that they had played. This included some of Carl’s review of actual Necron game play. In the main segment of the show, the guys give a full rundown of each and every month of the year of 2011. They go over all of the GW releases, Forgewoeld Releases, and Black Library Releases for each month and measure their impact on the game. January they talked about Dan Abnett and his medical condition which cause a few of his works to be late, eBook format for the Horus Hersey series, and the release of the Storm-Chicken! They breeze over February and March, with included Adepticon and the Grey Knights release! They then cover some of the mid-month Fantasy releases and the rise in value of the White Dwarf magazine. To close out the first part of the review, the guys go into June and the controversial release of Finecast. In segment two they talked about the new Sisters of Battle White Dwarf release part one, Forgeworld’s Realm of Battle addition and Space Marine the video game. Then they go deeper into the Sister of Battle with the rules and point cost release. Next, we had some interesting releases from Forgeworld, including the new ‘old-style’ Landraiders and Rhinos. They then move on to some Fantasy Flight releases, including Black Crusade. They then talk about the October release of Dreadfleet and give their overall opinion of the game and the release. They also discuss the brand new Liquid Green Stuff and the infinite uses for this product. Also they covered the release of Apocalypse Second Edition. They then roll into November and the long awaited Necron release, including all of the great looking models and some pre-6th Edition rules perhaps? They then talk about the Mega-Paint set, and the two 40K Mega-forces for the Dark Eldar and the Space Marines. They then move on to talk about the end of the year, including the release of Imperial Armor 11.

Opinion: Overall this was a really good podcast. I am a fan of the year in review, as sometimes we can forget all that has come and gone in such a short period of time, and this was one of the best I had heard this year. Definitely worth looking into this week! Great show guys!

40K UK – Episode 38 ***Explicit***

Highlights: This week is virtually dedicated to the Sisters of Battle. After some introductions, the show opens up with ‘The Shoutout’ where the guys are joined by James ‘Chucky’ Ramsey and they have a look at the Sisters of Battle, going into the history of the codex. They open up by discussing the idea of White Dwarf codices overall. They then move on to talk about what was lost from the old codex and what has changed with this new codex. They also discuss the now revised Sisters of Battle backstory in some light detail. Then, in ‘Operation Codex’ the guys get back to the Necron Fast Attack choices. This week the guys first cover the awesome Wraiths and what they bring to the game tactically. This goes off the rails a bit and becomes an overall discuss about the Necron army and some of the tactics that are coming out after some games actually played. They also review the Destroys and discuss some of the options that they open up. Next, the boys get back to talking about the Sisters of Battle, this time talking about the competitive list that James is running on the UK tournament scene. He give a full rundown of each and every unit and upgrade he uses and why. He also discusses some of the strategies and tactics he uses on the battlefield. Next up in ‘The Match Live’, Dave commentates a battle between James and his Sister and Gary and his Necrons. They open up with a rundown of each of the list that will be battling, and move on to a turn-by-turn review of the game. Each player takes their turn discussing the game live, as it happens.

Opinion: Great show this week, and I really enjoyed the Sisters coverage. This is one of the Codices that most people wrote of almost right away and thought nothing more of it. So to go into them with an experienced player was really great. Great work guys!

The Overlords – Episode 82 ***Explicit***

Highlights: This week the crew is joined by Jason for the first time and they open up with a brief news segment where they review some new releases from Forgeworld. Next, they moved on to local Overlords news where they talked about what they have been doing in the club this week. This rolled into the games that they have been playing this week, and Shagga had some great Necron advice here. Then, in ‘Top Chat’ the boys discuss Fluffy Puppies, or a more story driven Space Wolves list as opposed to the more competitive builds for a listener. They built two different base 1000 point lists and scaled them up all the way to 2000 points. Next up in Steve’s Round Table, the guys discussed the Space Marine Tactical squads and if you should take a Heavy Weapon with them or not. They give the pros and cons of adding a heavy weapon (and which one) to the Tactical Squad. This also moved on to a conversation about the assault and shooting phase rules and some things they would like to see changed in with leadership and sweeping advance. To close out the show, Dagmire is back with a Black Library book review of Angels of Darkness by Gav Thorpe. He opens up with a read from the novel and a look at the cover art, before talking about some of the details of the story.

Opinion: Overall this was yet again another good show from the Overlords. I really enjoyed hearing some different takes on an army I play (Space Wolves) and how I might be able to fluff them up some. Also, the debate over the Tactical Marine and heavy weapons was great; though I am surprised no one mentioned that you need to buy 10 marines before you can get the heavy. Great work guys!

Preferred Enemies – Episode 19***Explicit***

Highlights: This week they guys are introducing a new segment, ‘Armies for Noobs’ where they review a codex and target that review for the new players. This week they are doing an overview of Codex Orks. They open up with their beginnings in 40K and give a brief analysis of the army, who they are, where their place is in the 40K universe, and how they play on the tabletop. They then start going over some of the key mark units from the codex and discuss the tricks to playing the army. They then go over each unit and discuss what is good and what isn’t about each. They mention multiple time how for the beginning player, the Assault on Black reach set is a must buy, and perhaps multiple times! Next, the guys talk about their Christmas this year and talk about what Santa brought them this year, or what they gave out as 40K gifts. After that they covered their light hobby progress, as it was the holidays things were crazy and not much got done. They also go over their New Year’s resolutions for 2012, and what they want to have done in 2012.

Opinion: I really like this show and mostly for the new segment. Most people when they do a review of an army assume that an experienced player is the one building the army. This took into account that this might be a new player to the game and took their review in that direction. This was a nice twist on the standard Codex Review. Great work guys!
