GW Talks Horus Heresy Rules Future

There’s been a lot of confusion on the future of the 30K Rules – so we asked GW what’s happening.

Warhammer 8th Edition on coming soon and EVERYONE is excited about it!

The Question

Except the 30K players who are a bit anxious at the moment.  Just last week folks noticed that there was a mismatch of messaging from official GW channels regarding the future of 30K rules:

Warhammer Digital product pages said: 30k will be getting updated rules to go along with 8th Edition.
Forge World product pages said: 30K will be using the current rules (7th ed.) once 8th Edition arrives.
And that led us to ask GW directly: “What’s up?”
30K players are a very loyal set of folks who really really love their plastic dudesmen, paid a high price for them, and rightly want to know what the future will hold for their hobby.

The Answer

GW Communications Staff asked BoLS to pass on to the community:
“Horus Heresy will carry on using the current ruleset right now (7th), and this will be the case for a while yet.
We will have confirmed news about the future of the Horus Heresy game and setting at Warhammer Fest at the end of May.”

So there you have it – right from the horse’s mouth.  It’s 7th Edition (“for a while yet”), and everyone sit tight for more word on what’s coming for 30K at Warhammer Fest.

~ Time to start stocking up on more Black Shields for me…

A while been an hour, a day, a week, a month, a year, a few years, 10 years ? not really much of an answer is it ?

    • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

they gave me this answer in an email, and my reply was exactly your statement, a GW ‘while’ might be a week or never. Its a non-answer. Jtust increases the uncertainty. I won’t be making any 30K purchases until this is resolved (and will reconsider playing 30K if they move the rules to 8th).

      • We’ve been waiting for a proper FAQ for IA13 for a “while” lmao

    • COsteve

Except it explicitly says the answer will be provided by the end of May in the statement.

  • DrLove42

My betting is Febraruary, at the next Weekender, we will make the swap. New black books for all the units with new points and rules, and Angelus released as the first big book in the new format

  • Sooner or later GW will switch over to 8th ed for the Heresy. There is no reason for them to keep with 7th. I cannot think of a reason for them to stay with 7th except that it might upset some players…but then equally it might upset just as many players if they don’t switch to 8th. In the end I think its just a question of when.

    • memitchell

I cannot think of a reason for them to switch to 8th, except continuity. Heresy does not have the bloat problems that require a full 40K reset.

      • If they switch over to 8th then any new minis will only require one set of rules instead of two (30k & 40k). Presumably, they also have more faith in the new ruleset and believe it to be better in which case why not switch over.

Personally I will reserve judgement as to which edition is better till we see how it goes down and if it plays how I’d like. To me the biggest problem with each edition has never really been the rules but rather the bloat and power creep; in many ways for me the game has gotten too big and I’d like to see it return to smaller battles, but thats never going to happen.

      • DaveTycho

How about an excuse to have a look at the 30k lists and tweaking them up to refine balance and fix any rules problems?

Or to be able to play your legions against other 40k lists without it being massively unbalanced?

Or to be able to play against 40k xenos lists to represent a crusade era game? Or just to try something different?

Or to be able to play against someone at all if for some reason, your can’t find any other 30k players to game against?

        • Corey Montgomery

That last point hit the nail on the head for me. As it stands at my place there isn’t really anyone that plays 30k so not being able to fight against 40k armies will really suck…

      • kevinharoun

Continuity is enough of a reason. You’ve already bought your 30K models. You’ll keep playing, or you won’t. Want to new people to move from 40K to buying Forgeworld? Give them familiar rules to play.

        • memitchell

Figured if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. They think 40K needs a reset. Does anyone think 30K does? Is continuity reason enough on its own to sack all previous HH rule books? I dunno. I bought to codexes late last year (Genestealer Cult and Imperial Agents). Both become story books next month. Not bitter, but not loving it.

  • memitchell

Interesting in that for “A While” GW will be simultaneously and currently supporting games using the three major phases of 40K game systems…Shadow War (RT to 2E), H. Hersey (3E to 7E), and 40K (8E).

  • uatu13

30K needs to follow 40K rules, or will quickly grow into the niche “specialist” games that eventually go extinct.

    • DaveTycho

I agree, but for different reasons. I want to see 30k transfer to 8th ed rules just so I can have some 40k vs 30k matches. Most played 30k to avoid the power creep in 40k, but if all the 40k and 30k lists get redone at once, then that power creep (hopefully) will be reduced so that 30k vs 40k matches become viable again. This kind of cross gaming would make 30k more mainstream and open to diversity as you can play your legions against xenos armies for a change. Also that increases the chances of bringing a 30k army to a GW store and not be forced to sit by or use a 40k space marine list if, for some reason, you can’t find another 30k player to game against.

And if it turns out that 40k lists aren’t as balanced as promised, or you just don’t like 30k vs 40k matchups, nothing is stopping you from playing 30k like normal.

One more thing. If the 8th ed rules speed up gameplay then it makes big games even better to play for 30k. Also while 30k players think it’s perfect, there is no harm in tweaking the 30k army lists too to make them more balanced and fix any problems that exist, aka 1k sons.

    • Lol, blood bowl, necromunda, BFG, mordheim were all going strong even with no GW support, hell entire 3rd party ranges exist for those games

    • Bama

I don’t think it would go extinct if it stayed with 7th. Bloodbowl is still around long after GW ended its support . Probably so much so that GW brought it back. I like 30k with 7th. I don’t like the generalism that the new system is bringing.

  • Mitchell

    YYYAAAASSSSSSS

  • Grieux
  • J Mad

Why cant it be both? Maybe they are staying as 7th but along with that a 8th ed set free for DL for those that want to play it/

  • Aura1

So will Forge World produce and distribute the 7e ruleset for anybody starting on HH games? Or do you have to trawl Ebay for no longer published rulebooks to base their games on? Essentially, they can’t carry on using 7e and NOT publishing 7e long term.

  • Angus Murphy

what is the big panic. play what ever rules you want. it’s your game

    • Severius_Tolluck

lol yep, not like HH is very organized play as is in most areas…

    • Walter Vining

my space marines hit in shooting and close combat on a 2 or better. can never be wounded, automatically pass saves. all of their weapons are D weapons using the 6th edition chart. fearless, ATSKNF, hit and run, zealot, preferred enemy (everything), tank hunter, monster hunter, fleet, can run and charge, always strike first

      • Dennis J. Pechavar

I’m playing Eldar. I guess you’ll last at least 3 turns before I table you. 😉

        • Walter Vining

can we at least slow play till turn 4 so we both get the bonus points?

          • Dennis J. Pechavar

            Of course.

          • Walter Vining

on turn 4 all of my marines come back as if they never left play

          • Dennis J. Pechavar

            Well obviously.

          • Walter Vining

I mean im still gonna lose because eldar win every game ever without needing to roll dice.

          • Dennis J. Pechavar

As long as you know it. That’s how we have fun and fluffy games.

This article missed a great opportunity to say “Right from the Horus’ mouth”

  • Ravingbantha

‘For a while’ in other words, till they get the last few books in the set out, and get all the money they can, then they will swap it to 8th edition.

    • Matthew Hoag

This, I suspect they will keep 7th till they get through the siege of Terra. Plus, for those saying it needs to be playable against 40k, almost all 30k models except the named characters will have rules in the Imperial Armor books. You know FW and GW would be more than happy to sell everyone 2 sets of books.

  • miniwar monger

Of course the next Heresy black book will use 8th.

And they will bring updated red books for 8th along over time.

Its the nature of the beast an why I am hesitant to rebuy rulebooks over and over again. Especially when they are as pricey as the Heresy books.

Similar declaration about Monsteous Arcanum models at Games Day a few years ago, and then no more were released and AoS came out with an entirely new setting. GW aren’t going to tell us that they’re going to abandon something in the future, whether they’re planning to or not.
