FW: The Orion Assault Dropship Preview

The Custodes are getting a fancy new ride into battle – come check out this teaser from Games Workshop!

via Warhammer Community

Created as a dedicated assault dropship for the Legio Custodes, the Orion can carry a full task force of the Emperor’s Talons into combat. Protected by frontal armour superior to that of the Legiones Astartes Thunderhawk Gunship, its weapons can swiftly clear a landing zone of hostile infantry and armour with brutal efficiency, allowing the units within to deploy before it soars back into the sky to unleash death upon any foe who dares approach.

We have seen some previous pictures as well from the Forge World Open Day 2017:

This new Orion Assault Dropship looks to pack a pretty big punch. On top of that, if you’re looking for a hobby challenge, this vehicle has a lot of smooth surfaces that you could really go nuts with. There is lots of potential for free-hand work, battle damage, or whatever crazy modeling opportunity you come up with.

We’re expecting to see this new kit available to order from Forge World pretty soon. Start saving your pennies now!

We’re in the pipe – Five by Five. Legio Custodes are coming your way in style!

  • barry sadler

Of course it is beautiful but am I alone thinking the Custodes vehicles share no esthetic with the baroque gilded armor of the emperors Swiss guard

    • Aura1

They got their armour well into Unity, many of their vehicles were the finest relics of more ancient Terran empires.

  • chris harrison

That thing has a very Tau look to it. Tech Heresy!!! Burn the Custodes!!!

    • Just what I thought. It looks more like something the Tau would build. I like it, but it just doesn’t look very imperial to me.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

All of the Custodes stuff is not very imperial. That’s the point. Their kit is the pinnacle of the Imperium’s tech.

        • Aura1

Exactly. They use all the remaining old star empire inspired tech, not the gothic/industrial look of post Age of Strife designs.

        • Well…. Yes, true. Custodes are more similar to the tech in the “Dark Age of Technology” than the Imperium of 40k.

          • stinkoman

whats the back story to that? why cant the imperium or the tech priests recreate it?

          • Damistar

My guess is that it’s not STC, but who’s going to question the “omnissiah”?

          • euansmith

“Sorry, mate, its the parts, you see, you just can’t get the spares these days.”

          • They probably don’t have the blueprints to the manufacturing plants.
That’s the issue with the Mechanicus, they don’t have the blueprints of a device, they have the blueprints and programs for the factories that build the device.
If those blueprints are lost they can’t replicate the factories by reverse engineering because that would be tech-heresy.
Also they’re deadly afraid of stuff from the Dark Age of Technology because evil Artificial Intelligences. ( *laughs in Tau* )

Let’s ignore the fact that tau at that time still lived in caves.

Its no flat triangle like the FW flyers, it’s not like … whatever that is was GW made and it doesn’t look like the oop Orca.

This thing is closer to a Corvus blackstar (not really close but closer than any tau flyer) combined with the other custodes vehicles.

Or you could say it looks like a flying Catamaran.

Teaser? Some people already have one

  • I_am_Alpharius

Likely on pre-order from Friday. Appears to be 9/10, whatever FW show off on their Monday WH-Com article is the product being launched that week.

  • Matt C

    so many $$

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

More than you want to spend but less than you are imagining.

      • euansmith

That’s good, ’cause I can imagine quite a lot.

  • Tushan

    8:ed rules?

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

      Not likely.

  • stinkoman

While i love the uniqueness of the Custodes and Sistsers of Silence and that they are not just more marines, i dont feel like they feel “imperium”-ish. Awesome gun boat.

  • Tom Spear

Cool model but way too much gold saturation. I know it’s all supposed to be in the emperors colours but doesn’t need to all be gold. Looks too much like a plastic toy….oh wait.

    • NNextremNN

Haha plastic … you wish … this will be resin like all other FW stuff which increases price, weight and work.

  • Josh Felstead

This thing is just a Barracuda with extra steps. Certainly doesn’t feel brutal enough to be worthy of Custodes.
