Summary
This is my newest "pure" Death Guard list made with the new Codex:CSM. It is built on the foundation of my combat doctrines learned from using Death Guard in 4th, and has been adapted to the newest codex.
What we have here is a strong mounted infantry core, backed up with a good number of lesser daemons. Three Vindicators exist for dealing with heavy enemy elements, and for drawing fire off of the advancing infantry.
The scoring unit count is good (an especially tricky task for an army whose "core footsoldier" costs 23pts per model), and it has good approach abilities.
The army is fundamentally mounted and protected from the worst of Lash armies. Its real strength comes from the 30 Plague Marine Infantry whose special weapons have been picked to add target flexibility without limiting their assault role.
The army will draw down the lessor daemons upon itself in turns 2-3 and throw them into assault to shut down the worst of enemy shooting, to further cover the Plague Marine's advance into HtH.
The Biker lord is a squad killer and his mobility, ability to pull down lessor daemons to support him, and his T:6(4) is quite a threat. He stands an excellent chance of making combat by turn 1 or 2 at the latest.
Finally the 3 Vindicators with their Daemonic Possession can provide a horrible fire magnet, and can force many armies to "hunker down" in cover for protection, making the approach to assault that much easier.
With 6 vehicles, there are multiple opportunities for "scab" style offensive or defensive formations that can be useful in a variety of missions to better defend the infantry or hold objectives.
As a final note to the dedicated Death Guard players... take a close look at my 6-man Lesser Deamon packs and note they are composed of 4 Plaguebearer models and 2 Nurgling models. That is done for a specific purpose you will uncover after thinking about it for a minute.

-OK... enough torture... Look at this illustration for the reason the Lessers are organized as such. Its a minor advantage, but I'll take that extra 3/4 inch of charge range if I can get it. The army is built around assault so I'm pushing for every advantage I can get in that arena, and I wanted to give you guys a concrete example of the little advantages you can sprinkle throughout an army with modelling options if you put your mind to it. Over the course of several games, these little things can add up.
To all my XIVth Legion fellows out there in the world... good hunting and may Grandfather Nurgle protect you!

BigRed: Great looking army, I've been following it for a while and I have to say it turned out fantastically. Now I don't play CSM, but if you can take 8 troop choices I'd say that I will consider playing. Also if you don't mind spoiling it, why are your lesser demons configured like that?
Also, how the hell do you avoid getting your rhinos blown up? That has always been a problem for mine.
I am curious as to why you chose flamers over plasma guns for the PMs. I would think that Feel No Pain is so good at mitigating toasting yourself that it is almost a requirement. Is it mainly to think Ork and IG hordes with hidden powerfists before they can assault you?
I also have no idea why you would have 4 PBs and 2 Nurglings in a unit. Some base heresy no doubt!

That list sounds very nasty! It looks very powerful and yet... there are so mant lesser deamons that people were so upset about.
hmmmm... had GW made yet another great codex?
I assume the big bases are there to soak up hidden power fist attacks that might be aimed at the Plague Marines... but then again BigRed has a lot of "tricks" up his sleve...

I like your Biker Lord, that's an idea I may have to steal :) I've been playing around with a 3-man Bike Squad to help land Terminators safely, but a multi-wound Lord with more HtH punch might fill that role just fine himself. He'd still have to swerve to miss Lascannons, of course...
My 2000-pt (planned) list includes Typhus and 6 Nurgle Terminators, a Greater Daemon, 4 Rhino-mounted squads of Plague Marines, a Defiler, and a Vindicator.
Also, could you go into more detail about your boar-mounted Lord? I'd love to see some close ups, and maybe even some tips for how to make my own (hint hint)
I too am curious as to why the 4 plaguebearers and 2 nurglings...
I am guessing that the demons are set up with mixed base sizes so that the larger bases can be placed closer to the enemy to give you more chance of reaching them on the turn that you assault with the unit.
Are those Rhinos WYSIWYG? Don't I see too many storm/combi- bolters?
@wehrkind, I've always been of the opinion that Plasma is overrated. Its risky to use and most importantly is a constant temptation to stand and shoot. I want my PMs in HtH as soon as possible, so they get melta/flamer loadouts to threaten vehicles and hordes, and still be able to charge.
For those interested in the Boar Lord, look through the Death Guard label for my older posts. There is an article on him specifically.
For those scratching their heads about the nurgling/plaguebearer mix, read the deepstrike rules carefully and try again. :)
I think that, by having a slightly larger couple of bases mixed in, when they deepstrike, they can theoretically have a greater likelyhood of placing subsequent models closer to the enemy. That said, its seems unlikely that the 7.5 milimeters gained by this would actually result in an advantage.
Another reason for the mixed base is that if the big bases get in combat, the smaller bases are more likely to be within 2 inches of the big bases, thus resuling in more fighters. But, since these squads are relatively small, getting all of the models into a close combat doesn't seem likely to be a problem either, especially since they should be able to count on getting the charge.
Post updated... Secret revealed!
i just noticed the rhino in the middle is so much.... cleaner than the other 2.

And here I thought that you were going to arrange the demons in the Nurgle symbol as they come out of the warp:
. . .( ). . .
. .( ) ( ). . .
What on the Vindicators indicates Daemonic Possession?
The fact that is says so on my army list.
Found it:

The boar is a good choice for a Nurgle-y mount. Perhaps a Rhinox would be suitable as well?
Wow, two more great options for a Nurgle Bike:
The Caller from Necromunda
Thing in the Woods from Mordheim
I almost made my Lord atop "The Caller", but I was up against a hard deadline so I went with the locally available chaos boars from fantasy.
I think "The Caller", some greenstuff, and some IG bits would make a stunning mount for a Nurgle Lord.
Is it legal to mix Bases in a unit wich only consist of equal models? (Imperial Guard would be the exception, since they come with different sized bases.)
And I noticed how you could arange more models up to the front - but this doesn't buy you any speed, does it?
Any of the old daemons except the Majors can now be fielded as Minor Summoned Deamons.
What was unique about Nurglings is that they came on 40mm bases, and are amongst the rarest, least seen daemons out there. I of course am a big fan of Nurglings have a boatload of them.
I was just going over my mini shelf pulling my Lesser Daemons squads together, when I glanced over at the little dudes and the devilish thought came to me...
I like this army a lot (Death guard player myself), but I see one big weakness.
How do you handle Escalation? You have NOTHING on the board in an Escalation game. Anyone with a bunch of infantry and an infiltrator or two will own the whole board.
hi, realy n1ce looking but some comments:
-dont you play escalation?
if you play escalation, you dont have an icon at the start of turn 2, so all your deamons(that come) in turn 2 die outright!
-you have such a n1ce greater deamon modell, it would fit in realy well (maybe with a small squad of chosen for deamon summoning in esc.)
-using nurglings bigger bases to get a game advantage is not what i call "good sportsmenship" but if you play hardcore competative its ok...
otherwise great army (esp. in your 30k leage)!!!
greetings Badger
I think you're allowed to but any model on any base, as long as it is at least as big as the base that comes with it.
You could put Imperial Guardsmen on 60mm bases, but not Greater Daemons on 20mm bases.
As BigRed said, though, the advantages of tweaking base size hardly ever really effect the game.
Regarding escalation; yes it hurts but I'll take the risk.
Nobody around here ever plays omega and the tournament circuit also frowns on escalation. I've actually seen GTs use a crazy-bizarro "reverse escalation" in a couple of missions before where ONLY mounted stuff starts on the board.
In short, its one of those rules that is pretty much universally despised by the player-base, so you almost never see it. I'll take my chances, and won't be surprized to see it go when 5th hits.
How do your Rhinos do without extra armor? I usually consider it nearly mandatory to stay mobile, even at its increased cost?
Oh, and a bit of personal experience - I've stopped using a Nurgle Lord with Daemon Weapon in my games, as I've found that I just can't roll well enough reliably enough to kill many things. With only S4, it's not as easy as it once was. Test it out and see.
The last game I used him in, he charged a squad of Thousand Sons, rolled a 6 for his daemon weapon and still failed to kill anyone, then got promptly force weaponed to death. Now I've switched him out for a D.Prince, and I've been much happier.
Nice army. I like how it looks and how it plays. I have zero problem with the demon base tactic, as the rules clearly state you can have larger bases. The larger base thing can be a wash anyway, as it can both help and hurt depending on the situation.
I wonder if the Lord should be a sorcerer with Nurgle's rot instead. I think the force weapon might be a better choice than the demon weapon.
I think its weak to put lesser deamons on swarm bases. What if i placed my 32 gautns broods on the same bases? Thouse guys whould hold up a unit for the rest of the game.
A 2" killzone is nothing against 32 models on 40mm bases. I whouldnt allow it in turnaments. And i whould demand that you placed the 40mm bases in the rear of the unit, to avoid the ekstra assault range. ESP as its only done for power gaming reasons.
I would point out that I have re-based nothing. Nurglings come on 40mm bases. If I wished, I could just field the entire unit as Nurglings.
The unit only uses mixed sizes because most folks don't have 30 bases of the little squirts.
In the case of a tournament, I would ask you to please point the judge to the Codex's list of miniatures which are allowed as Lesser Summoned Daemons...
How would you restructure this list for a 1750 tourney?
This is a cool list and i just nicked it for my thousand sons.
i replaced one vindi with a laspred and the demons with termies in a land raider, tho.
btw, you should post more lists and tactica. they are a big help. :)
how have you painted the basic infantry, they look great and iv been thinking bout doing a pr heresy dg army for some time and what with the new sm codex release coming up, i thought i might get a head start. thanks
Alright Big Red you have to help me out. I ran across you list today and i love it. I run pretty much the same exact list with out the nurglings, You mentioned that in the Chaos book it lays out what models you can use for lesser deamons. I havent used my swarms because they were not really infantry. but if it says that we can use those then i would love to have a couple of units of nothing but nurglings. the mixed unit thing im not so hot about but hey to each there own. Ã…nyways i want to legally run my nurglings as lesser deamons so please help big red
My earlier point was that the chaos book specifically does NOT lay out what models you can use to represent the generic minor daemons.
So I use any Nurgle daemons that are not the GUO.
I mean, come on...how can someone argue that a stand of nurglings aren't lesser daemons :)
I decided to try out this list for myself as I've never used plague marines or lesser daemons before. I went up against a tyranid army with 5 monstrous creatures, and I was wondering how you dealt with armies heavy on them, as they go right through FNP and besides the vindys their aren't any heavy weapons.
Thanks
Well, I have to say that three vindi is quite nasty against mos things, but the fact still remains that it is an Ordnance blast weapon and thus it will tend to scatter. I would personally take out one of those Vindis and put in a squad of two-three Obliterators for the added flexibility.
As for Summoned daemons, I tend to think of them as average choices not nasty units. For scoring assault units, they are rather soft and they do not have any offensive grenades makes them rather weak. I would take out all the Daemons and put in another plague marine squad in rhinos instead.
